My great grandfather (Gramps) was an engineer on the Cotton Belt Railroad from 1908 - 1967 (mandatory retirement at 65 kicked in that year - he was 77 ATT). My grandfather (PaPaw) also drove trains for CBRR. First time I heard the name Payseur was about 1969. We were driving to the farm and they were talking about “the power behind the throne” at Southern Pacific Railroad. SPRR had been running operations for CBRR for several years by then, and was working towards an eventual buyout. They said the “ace in the hole” was that the Payseur’s owned almost all the railroad right-of-way land in the country. Flash forward ~2004: I’m doing a panel discussion at Carnegie Mellon with the Chief Security Officer of Sprint. As an aside, I mentioned the convo with Gramps (et al). He verified the land holdings and was quite surprised that I knew the story.
Why did I mention it to him in the first place? Who owned Sprint (pre T-Mobile)? SPRR did, and they used the RR right of ways to build out their infrastructure at SIGNIFICANTLY reduced costs relative to every other company in the industry. They also made a fortune leasing out that land and infrastructure to their competitors. Choo choo 🚂
