Many professionals are under the impression that the due date of 31 July 2026 is applicable only for ITR-1 & ITR-2!

This confusion perhaps stems from the fact that even the CPC's mass SMS/email communications were largely focused on ITR-1 & ITR-2.

However, on a careful analysis of the Department's utilities and the updated message on the Income Tax Portal homepage, it is evident that the due date of 31 July 2026 also applies to certain other returns.

VERY VERY IMPORTANT: Due Date - 31 July 2026

✅ ITR-1
✅ ITR-2
✅ ITR-5 (where there is no business/professional income)
• e.g. Societies having only Non-Business Income
• Partnership Firms with NIL business income and NIL Balance Sheet (e.g. business not yet commenced)
✅ ITR-7 (in eligible non-audit cases)
• e.g. entities claiming exemption under section 10(23C)(iiiad) instead of registration under section 12AB, or
• Certain 12A Registered Charitable trusts not liable to audit as Gross Receipts do not exceed the prescribed threshold.

The Income Tax Portal homepage has now also been amended to clarify this position, mentioning that all income tax returns except ITR-3, ITR-4 and ITR-6 are covered by the 31 July 2026 due date.

This clarification may help avoid unnecessary confusion and last-minute compliance issues for eligible assessees.

ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਦਰਦਨਾਕ ਕਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋ ਇੱਕ ਕਿੱਸਾ: ਗੁਰਦਾਸਪੁਰ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਬਹਾਦਰਪੁਰ ਦੀ ਵਸਨੀਕ 17 ਸਾਲਾ ਸਰਬਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਨੂੰ 10 ਫਰਵਰੀ, 1991 ਨੂੰ ਖਾਲਿਸਤਾਨ ਕਮਾਂਡੋ ਫੋਰਸ (ਕੇਸੀਐਫ) ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੇਰ ਸ਼ੇਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਅਗਵਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ। ਰਿਪੋਰਟਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸਦੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਚੁੱਕ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਸਨ।ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਤੱਕ ਬੰਦੀ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਬਲਾਤਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਇਕ ਰੇਡ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸ਼ੇਰਾ ਪੁਲਸ ਵਲੋਂ ਫੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਖੁਲਾਸਾ ਹੋਇਆ। ਇਹ ਹਨ ਖਾਲਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ।

* ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਿਰਦੋਸ਼ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੱਸਾਂ 'ਚੋਂ, ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ 'ਚੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ।

* ਸ਼ਾਮ ਦੇ 5 ਵੱਜਦੇ ਹੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ 'ਚ ਸੰਨਾਟਾ ਪਸਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਮਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਲ, ਭੈਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੀਰ ਇੱਕ ਝਟਕੇ 'ਚ ਖਤਮ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਨ।

* ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਉਹ ਖੌਫਨਾਕ ਰਾਤਾਂ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੰਬ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਨੇ।

* ਇਹ ਸੀ 90 ਦਾ ਦਹਾਕਾ—ਖੂਨ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ। ਚੱਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਗੋਲੀ ਨੇ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਜਾਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ।
