Ampère's Law relates the integrated magnetic field B around a closed loop to the electric current I passing through that loop.
Integral form:
∮ B · ds = μ₀ I
(where ∮ = closed line integral, ds = infinitesimal path element, μ₀ = permeability of free space ≈ 4π × 10⁻⁷ T·m/A, I = current enclosed).
For an infinite straight wire:
B = μ₀ I / (2πr)
Differential form:
∇ × B = μ₀ J
(where J = current density).
Ampère's Law is used to calculate the magnetic field produced by steady currents in highly symmetric configurations (straight wires, solenoids, toroids). It is one of the four Maxwell's equations that unify electricity and magnetism.
