OMAN’S SULTAN QABOOS BIN SAID - Mostly Competent Pragmatism
Along East Africa’s Swahili Coast you will see lots of vehicles and surfaces decorated with pictures of Oman’s Royal Family - especially the Late Sultan Qaboos bin Said. This is not just a function of lots of Swahili People having Omani ancestry - the Omani Royal family is highly respected in much of the Muslim World. If you ask Arabs who their favourite modern Arab Leader you are far more likely to hear Qaboos bin Said than Nasser or Gaddafi
Part of the reason Qaboos is so popular is because of how highly competent his project of developing Oman was - pragmatic and free of ideological excess to a degree on par with Lee Kuan Yew, Paul Kagame, perhaps Park Chung Hee or the comparable more oil-rich Gulf Monarchies of the Saudis, Al-Maktoums, Al-Thanis etc - while still managing to be relatively open by Muslim World standards in a way that didn’t alienate outsiders to the degree those latter Arab Peninsula Families are often accused of having done
Prior to Qaboos bin Said’s rule, Oman was a backwards Indian Ocean Slaver Kingdom that had lost the hold on the Swahili Coast Empire it once had. Under the rule of his father, Oman had maintained its feudalistic characteristics despite the rapid changes occurring in the Middle East at the turn of the century. Infant mortality rates and illiteracy skyrocketed, and general unrest manifested itself in a Marxist rebellion in Dhofar in the country’s south
However, in July 1970, Sultan Qaboos ousted his father Said bin Taimur in a coup, and once he took power he promised Omani citizens that he would transform their ‘life into a prosperous one with a bright future.’ To that end he decided to deliberately set about modernising in a way that was ‘in keeping’ with the Country’s history and culture - a kind of Omanifuturism
Qaboos increased GDP from USD$256m in 1970 to around USD$79.66 billion in 2012. He waged an effective systemic campaign against communism and eliminated the rebels unlike in nearby Yemen. He set about on a massive infrastructure building project to bring Oman into the 20th Century by establishing a network of schools, hospitals roads, public transport and universities. He also created a highly functioning national health care system and sanitary facilities for food handling, waste disposal, water purification etc - which had previously been near impossible given Oman’s desert interior
Qaboos bin Said was an incredibly competent leader and because of that mostly competent governance Oman avoided the fate of Yemen and is able to punch above its weight today
Obrigado Deus por esse momento, obrigado nação por transformar esse momento cada vez mais especial, ficará marcado na minha história. Seguimos juntos com o apoio de vocês, amo vocês!🤍😉🇧🇷 @CBF_Futebol
Morocco should be used as an example for all these countries trying to compete with the big boys
Invest heavily in stadiums, youth players & see if you can tap a couple players up that have dual nationality.
It will take years to achieve but it will be worth it.
When they hosted AFCON and I seen the stadiums over there I was blown away that country is serious about football.
Theres grown men with fully developed brains arguing that the Portuguese players are not passing to Ronaldo and playing bad on purpose bc they’re trying to sabotage him. And they fully believe this
