The end of cheap Chinese trinkets
Starting today, the EU will begin charging a €3 fee on parcels from non-EU countries worth up to €150 purchased on online platforms.
Brussels says the surge in ultra-cheap online imports puts EU retailers at a disadvantage, and many products do not meet EU safety standards.
It is also noted that the EU is urging Ukraine to adopt a similar law.
From today, customs duties apply to e-commerce parcels worth up to €150 entering the EU.
30 million Europeans work in retail; it's our our largest private-sector employer.
And the surge in low-value online imports has put our retailers at an unfair disadvantage.
Too many of these products also fail to meet EU safety standards, putting consumers at risk.
Today's change is about restoring fairness for European businesses and better protecting our consumers.
Following conversations with the US government, we’ve updated our cybersecurity safeguards.
The vast majority of coding work is unaffected.
In the near term, the new safeguards will flag a slightly higher fraction of harmless requests than the previous Fable safeguards; we’re working to refine these over the coming weeks. Users will be clearly notified when a request is flagged, and they’ll instead receive a response from Opus 4.8.
Our biology and chemistry classifiers are unchanged from our initial launch. These are still broader than we would like; they trigger fallbacks to Opus 4.8 on basic biology-adjacent questions. Improvements to these classifiers are landing soon.
"Its (Sonnet 5) performance is close to Opus 4.8, at lower prices."
So I ran 4 canvas test through both.
> Opus 4.8, 4/4 actually animating.
> Sonnet 5, 2/4 came back as static images.
And "lower price"? On the paper shredder task, Sonnet 5 spent $0.36 for a static image. Opus 4.8 spent $0.18 and it actually animated.
The 4 tests:
> Win 98 drag-to-BSOD
> Self-typing keyboard + CRT
> Letter burning
> Paper shredder
🇩🇪🚨‼️ SHOCKING - (NO) FREE SPEECH IN GERMANY?
A German journalist complained about a broken air conditioner and a crowded train on the German state-owned railway. HE WAS CENSORED!
CENSORED FOR SAYING THE TRAIN WAS HOT AND PACKED - WHICH IS TRUE!
Germans apparently cannot speak negatively about German railroads, even though he told the truth about his bad experience!
This is insane! It’s not even violent hate speech—or is it?
Europe’s freedom of speech!?
