This is Lito Sousa.

For decades, Lito has made aviation understandable to millions of people. Aircraft mechanic, pilot, educator, and the man behind one of Brazil's biggest aviation channels.

Then, in a matter of weeks, his life changed.

In July, Lito revealed he had prostate cancer. Around the same time, numbness in his arm led doctors into a much more unusual investigation.

The eventual diagnosis was Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD).

CJD is an extraordinarily rare prion disease — affecting roughly 1–2 people per million each year — in which misfolded proteins trigger rapidly progressive degeneration of the brain.

There is currently no standard treatment capable of stopping it.

Lito has already lost significant motor function.

But he remains lucid.

Yesterday, from a hospital bed, he made the appeal you see above.

He and his family are trying to get his case in front of Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Broad Institute / Harvard and Mayo Clinic, hoping for access to experimental research.

The appeal asks everyone who sees it to share Lito's story as widely as possible.

It ends with four words:

“Every minute matters.”

Because with a disease progressing this quickly, it does.

That is where this token gets its name.
