What was "illegal" about something that was standing for over a hundred years. Even a government can lose both possession and title, over a very long period of time. Even if a local court rules in favour of a government, then reasonable time to appeal to the High Court could have been granted.
A mosque built on the Collectorate premises in UP's Sahranpur was demolished at 5 am this morning. Overnight, reports had spread that it would be torn down. The local administration has allegedly then rubbished the claims. When people woke up, they found the mosque already razed to the ground.
On 16 July, the district administration had declared the construction illegal. The Muslim side challenged that order in the district court on 22 July 2026. After examining the arguments and evidence from both sides, the court held that the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 did not apply to the property in question and had no bearing on this illegal construction. It then ordered the mosque’s removal.
This is a fraudulent fundraising appeal being circulated by unknown persons for their own financial gain. Neither Sharjeel Imam nor his family has authorised this appeal or is seeking any financial assistance for his legal cases.
We request everyone not to send any money or make any donation in Sharjeel @_imaams name on the basis of such posts.
The persons responsible for creating and circulating this misleading appeal should be identified, and appropriate criminal proceedings must be initiated against them for misusing Sharjeel’s name and misleading the public.
Please share this clarification widely.

🚨SIR, to put it mildly, is a bureaucratic nightmare. I report on why if you filled your form online, your name might have slipped off the rolls.
Also, byline now has a new home @htTweets :)
Again, women and Muslims lead those who have lost their votes. What we are witnessing is a dramatic, unconstitutional purge of voters, unprecedented in a (supposed) democracy
Dr S.Y. Quraishi writes;
“Parliament does not vote in proportions; it votes in absolute numbers. Governments are formed by numbers, and confidence motions, legislation, and constitutional amendments are decided by numbers.…”

Here is a short thread on global histories of "disruptions," that include Chakka-Jaam, showing how these events shaped our perception of democratic struggles, citizenship, and the ability to make demands of a state:
That there was no case against Sharjeel Imam & he was targeted for his identity was apparent from the start, but few spoke up then, as I wrote at the time.
Boggles the mind that saying this after 6 years should be 'controversial' for anyone not a Sanghi

"A 'good Muslim' is basically an anti-Muslim."
Extending Mahmood Mamdani's "Good Muslim, Bad Muslim" framework, Prof. @IrfanHindustan argues that contemporary discourse has moved a step further: public legitimacy is now granted almost exclusively to Muslims who adopt an anti-Islamic stance, openly mocking, disavowing, or renouncing Islam.

“Rather than asking the question, who is the terrorist? I pose a counter question: Who needs the label or the category of terrorist?”
In a conversation with @_ali_javed_, Prof. @IrfanHindustan discusses his new book Terrorism in Question, examining how terrorism became associated with Islam, how the media and law construct the “Muslim terrorist,” and why decolonising the study of terrorism matters.

"Fanaticism" as a concept traverses continental histories. Prof. @IrfanHindustan traces how the label was used against Indian Muslims under colonial rule—and Black Americans demanding equality. In conversation with @_ali_javed_, he explains how freedom demands become recast as extremism.
