Seperti kata Gus Dur, Tuhan tidak perlu dibela;
Seperti itulah Anwar, Anwar tidak perlu dibela.
Anwar telah menjadi sosok besar, pemimpin no satu negara.
Beranggapan mengampu Anwar akan menjadikannya lebih kuat dan relevan adalah khayalan.
Thank you for the kind messages that so many of you have sent me. It would be unnatural for me to not be disappointed, but I feel no bitterness or anger.
I have spent more than half my life in KEADILAN. At the age of 19, I helped the party out when it was far from the popular thing to do. Months after working as an executive at PNB, I made the decision to repay my UK scholarship and work full time for Anwar Ibrahim, while my colleagues were planning their careers in corporate Malaysia.
In 2008, the party lacked candidates. Having started a tuition project at a low-cost flat in PJ, I ran for the state seat of Seri Setia - where the project was situated. We stunned the doubters and I became the youngest candidate, with BN defeated in Selangor for the first time.
Five years later, we failed to gain a majority of Parliamentary seats despite having the popular vote. When Anwar and Rafizi Ramli asked me to book the stadium for the Black505 rally, I agreed without hesitation. For five years, I went up and down the courts as a result of the charges filed against me for this act.
When Anwar was sent to prison, we organised the KitaLawan rallies. It started with only a few of us stubborn and crazy youths, but became a major movement and earned us a few days in the lock up.
In 2018, I stood in the safe BN parliamentary seat of Setiawangsa. We campaigned on a message that winning the seat meant PH would win Putrajaya.
Both came true in 2018. Later, we were painted as noisy backbenchers, who wanted to ensure Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s promise of handing power to Anwar would be realised.
I have always been driven by the idea that Malaysia can only realise its promise through progressive politics. Achieving it was the new politics for our generation, one that was not rooted in narrow racial or religious views.
I have been fortunate to have been given the privilege to serve at a very young age. I have been blessed with the friendship of the many ordinary Malaysians who support the struggle.
This is not an end, but rather a bend in the road in a long journey. God is the best of planners.
