BioRTC Permanent Site Completed – A Landmark Achievement for Medical Research in Nigeria
We are delighted to announce the completion of the permanent site of BioRTC, a monumental achievement made possible through the unwavering support of the Yobe State Government.
5/ 🌍 The cell lines are stored at @BioRTC (🇳🇬), @WashUMedADRC (🇺🇸), and @SussexLifeSci (🇬🇧). Researchers can request access via @BioRTC, and it will be fulfilled from the nearest repository to reduce logistics challenges. Request link: https://t.co/EikMHu2pHI
4/ 🧠 To boost the utility of this resource, using CRISPR/Cas9, we engineered pathogenic #MAPT mutations (P301L & R406W) linked to #FTD. These edited lines provide a powerful tool for studying #tau-related pathologies in an #African genetic background.
3/ 🔬 To bridge this gap, we launched the #AfricaniPSCInitiative. We began by generating high-quality #iPSCs using fibroblasts from 10 donors (both sexes, 5 ethnic groups), confirmed pluripotency, genomic stability, and differentiation potential.

2/ 🧬 #Africa boasts unparalleled genetic #diversity, yet African populations are vastly underrepresented in #biomedical models. This limits insights into disease mechanisms and potential therapies for many diseases like #Alzheimers's & frontotemporal #dementia.
We aim to change that. ⬇️
1/ 🌍 It’s finally out!
Introducing the #AfricaniPSCInitiative, an open-access Somatic & Stem Cell Bank featuring rigorously profiled #iPSC lines from indigenous Africans. Huge thanks to @karchlab, who helped make this possible. See: https://t.co/EikMHu2pHI
Honoured to have received the Outstanding Early-Career Impact Award from the @SussexUni for my work on #iPSCs from Indigenous #Africans. Grateful to my team, mentors, and collaborators, as well as our funders, who make this work possible.
I’m excited to have learned how to acquire spectral images that can transform healthcare. I look forward to exploring phasor analysis. Thanks to @MalacridaLab, @Marceladiazf and the IPM community for their support and to my mentor @mahmoudbukar for this career shaping opportunity
