Two years back, I wrote an article explaining how simultaneous multithreading (AKA hyperthreading) works. It enables a single processor core to run 2 threads simultaneously by interleaving their instructions without doing a context switch.

The article breaks down the CPU microarchitecture details that make this possible. The interesting part is that if you read it, you also get a solid overview of how processors execute instructions.
