The Indian state’s brutality against its own people and the impunity the police enjoys is shameful. How easily they normalise police violence! How quickly citizens are framed as criminals.
After detaining journalists and lawyers, new low from @DelhiPolice.
Slashing the tyres of vehicles belonging to lawyers who are providing legal aid to detainees. Is intimidating lawyers for doing their duty now part of policing in Delhi?
Last update by @AshwineSingh along with @SavyasachiAstha. They were detained by @DelhiPolice after this — it’s simply saying how wi-fi is being cut off in hotels that influencers are using to put out updates since there’s a total internet jam in CP.
Along with them @anmolpritamND has also been detained. Do check out all their updates today see if they were obstructing the police in their work. Please amplify all updates by @newslaundry today.
The govt is really scared that information about people getting out to protest despite the security will be disseminated.
Hence getting the police to detain journalists @sighyush
Absolutely brilliant that SFI, AISA, the CPI(M) and the Left have taken the protest to other parts of Delhi.
(INA and access to the Jantar Mantar radial further up partly blocked as of now, be careful if you're out.)
Already clear that the protesters have won the day. Imagine bringing in 25,000-odd troops, cutting off transport and the Internet, barricading the city's central hub — and still they can't stop Delhi from showing up.
Jean Dreze: “We are defending the right to protest, right to assemble, right to free expression, right to vote…these are all basic democratic rights…” Gets whisked away by Delhi Police.
My colleague, one of India's best investigative reporters, Ayush Tiwari @sighyush has been detained by Delhi Police near ITO.
He was not even at Jantar Mantar.
He had his press card prominently displayed.
He told the police many times he was a journalist.
Despite that he was bundled into a van and taken away.
Follow our live @nytimes coverage as protesters try to reach an Indian capital that is under lockdown, with massive security presence and barricading.

Delhi is locked down. Every person walking is a threat to the BJP state. People are detained and restrained. The Supreme Court sees nothing wrong with it. But it shows this govt's days are over. The castle is crumbling.
Modi has accepted defeat even before our protest has begun.
The mass crackdown on protesters and the shutdown of Delhi are not signs of strength, but of a leader terrified of his own people.
