Great question. The script itself stores nothing on your device, it just reports the pageview.

To count unique visitors, our server takes the IP address and a rough browser type, mixes them with the site and today's date into a one way hash, and immediately throws the IP away. Tomorrow that hash is different, so nobody can follow user from one day to the next, not even us. The raw IP never touches the database.

So you get the same numbers a cookie would give you, without the cookie.
