I’m giving The Invite (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) The Five Star Treatment. As someone with a PHD in complaining & a Master’s degree in bitching, I have nothing negative to say about this film. The Invite is the best movie of 2026 so far. Olivia Wilde directed the shit out of this. I’ll get to the script & the performances in a moment but Wilde’s direction elevates a great adult comedy into something unforgettable - I sort of can’t believe the filmmaking. But then there’s the acting. Only four actors are featured here: Wilde, Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton. But when I tell you these four actors aren’t just good- they aren’t just great- they’re out of this fucking world, you have to believe me. The Academy Awards better make room for The Invite.
I saw The Invite at a sold-out showing at 7:00 PM at The Grove here in Los Angeles. The crowd was mostly 35 and under from what I could tell. And the buzz in the theater was utterly electric. I’ve complained at length about how awful the theater-going experience was during Obsession & Backrooms. That was not the case here. This was one of the most locked, engaged crowds I’ve experienced in forever. And a big reason for that is because this film grabs you by the collar from the opening shot & never lets you off the hook.
The Invite is an English remake of the 2020 film The People Upstairs. It’s the story of two couples - Angela (Wilde) & Joe (Rogen), who decide to host their new neighbors, Hawk (Norton) & Pina (Cruz). The crux of the story is that Angela & Joe are your vintage, unhappy, dissatisfied married couple, while Hawk & Pina are still in a fresh stage of early love. Angela pulls the trigger one night & invites Hawk and Pina over and the two couples are off for a night that is utterly unpredictable. I refuse to giveaway any more of the plot beyond this- you have to see the film yourself to fully embrace its unpredictability.
The script is fucking incredible. It’s been so long since I’ve seen a film in theaters that hits you with joke after joke after joke. Laughter from the crowd literally drowned out portions of the film because people were utterly dying. Not only that, the dialogue between characters isn’t just hilarious- it’s relatable & meaningful. Part of that is born out of the fact that Pina is a therapist & throughout the night, she gets deeper & deeper into Hawk & Pina’s relationship. The other part of that is born out of sheer circumstance- which is having a “new couple” interact with an “old couple”. For these reasons, I definitely expect The Invite to contend not just for a nomination, but to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
But not only is the story & script strong, Wilde’s direction took my breath away. I mentioned this film only has 4 actors, but the way Wilde shoots Angela and Joe’s apartment makes the apartment itself its own character. I can’t believe some of the shots she gives us in this film. The lighting, the blocking- all of it is done with care. This felt like a real film directed by a real filmmaker, so much so that perhaps the most memorable moments of this film are without dialogue, but rather when Wilde taking us through the apartment & shows us the emotions Joe & Angela are experiencing. Wilde blew me away.
Lastly, the acting. My god…the acting. Those of you who’ve followed me long enough know that my family is from Alcobendas, Spain, the same town Penelope Cruz was born. I’m always partial to Cruz, but this has to be considered one of her best performances. She’s so unbelievably brilliant & funny. So is Edward Norton, who absolutely gets a chance to shine in the last 1/3rd. But more than anyone, Seth Rogen stole the show. This is perhaps the funniest I’ve ever seen Rogen & I’ve grown up on his films. His line delivery & his facial expressions were unforgettable. The casting & the performances were simply perfect.
I’m literally levitating after seeing this film. This is what going to the movies is all about.
