The irony is that the U.S. and India are "Major Defense Partners," conduct joint military exercises and cooperate across the Indo-Pacific. Yet the U.S. Navy has launched missile strikes against commercial tankers in international waters and killed Indian merchant mariners.

The U.S. Navy had direct communications with the crews of the three foreign-flagged commercial tankers and was fully aware of their Indian nationality before launching the strikes that killed three crew members this week.

This echoes March, when the U.S. Navy torpedoed and sank, in India's backyard, an Iranian frigate returning in a non-combat configuration after largely expending its munitions during an India-hosted multilateral naval exercise in which the U.S. also participated.

And just as the U.S. Navy did not attempt to rescue the sailors from the sinking frigate, it likewise did not come to the aid of the surviving Indian crew members aboard the three tankers it struck. The rescue efforts were mounted instead by Omani authorities.

It is noteworthy that the vessels Washington labels part of a "shadow fleet" transporting crude oil are largely linked to China and Russia. Yet since the Trump-ordered naval blockade began on April 13 without any basis in international law, the U.S. military has not struck a single tanker actively bound for, or coming directly from, either China or Russia.

Striking such a vessel would transform a localized naval blockade into a direct geopolitical confrontation with Beijing or Moscow — a line the Trump administration has explicitly avoided crossing. Instead, it has employed kinetic force only against lower-profile vessels, including those carrying Indian crew members.

Taken together, these incidents are a sad commentary on the state of India's foreign policy under the present government.

India’s Military Is Preparing for the Wrong War

India’s military strategy remains geared toward fighting the next big conventional war, even as its two closely aligned regional adversaries, China and Pakistan, prosecute asymmetric campaigns against it. China’s stealthy land grabs in Ladakh in 2020 — achieved without firing a single shot — offer a telling example.

America’s war in Iran has again underscored the new logic of warfare: advantage no longer rests solely with the technologically superior, but with the strategically adaptive. Despite unleashing overwhelming force, the U.S. failed to convert its tactical successes into a tangible strategic outcome in the face of Iran’s asymmetric reprisals.

This is a lesson India can ill afford to ignore, given its continued emphasis on importing big-ticket platforms. It has consistently ranked among the world’s largest arms importers.

New Delhi is now advancing a major Rafale deal with France worth around $40 billion — far exceeding its cumulative investment this century in indigenous missile and drone development. The Iran war, much like the conflict in Ukraine, highlights that low-cost drones and missiles are now decisive, transformative weapons of deterrence and reprisal, often outpacing traditional high-end systems in strategic effect.

A few days ago, three unrelated people were found dead inside a Tata Tiago on the Peeragarhi flyover in Delhi. There were no signs of forced entry, struggle, or injury. Initially, it was suspected to be suicide.

As the police dug deeper, CCTV footage revealed that a fourth person, an elderly man, had been inside the car earlier. Call records and further analysis identified a tantrik, Kariumddin, as the mastermind.

He had lured the three victims, two men and a woman, all property dealers, by promising to double their money through a ritual. The cash was kept in the car. As part of the ritual, he fed them poisoned laddoos. By the time the car reached the flyover, they had begun to deteriorate. They stopped the vehicle, tried to understand what was happening, and died soon after. The tantrik walked away.

Ordinary crime scene. Such things happen every day. What is truly outrageous is that the same Kariumddin has killed three more people earlier in two separate incidents, one in UP and another in Rajasthan, and was out on bail in both cases.

I’m sure that based on his age (79) and the fact that he prays a lot, he’ll get bail here too and will be back to his usual self. What a toothless justice system we have.
