Morning! โ๏ธ
Up late last night brushing up on some animation techniques, hence this. I like the budgie...๐
Have to-do list as long as my arm today, so I'd better get t'kettle on and think about getting going. Have a good day, you lovely lot. ๐โ๏ธ
This is completely unsustainable... and I work for min wage. The min wage needs to be FROZEN and Personal Allowances raised instead.
So many retailers were already on the brink, this might be the final straw.
For years, activists have claimed it is racist to break down sex crime statistics by nationality. This is nonsense.
It should surprise no one that men from cultures in which women are treated as subordinate are convicted of sexual offences at disproportionately high rates.
Never attribute to cynicism what can be explained by stupidity.
It's a version of Hanlon's razor, and I think it's the most underrated key to understanding what's happening to the West.
By stupidity I don't mean low IQ. Most of these people are brilliant. I mean a mind running software it never chose.
The tempting story is a cabal. A small room of evil men who know exactly what they're doing and do it anyway. I don't buy it. Not because the elites are innocent. Because the truth is worse.
Almost nobody thinks they're the villain. Almost everyone is convinced they're on the right side of history. The Brussels bureaucrat, the NGO director, the journalist, the central banker. None of them wakes up wanting to destroy anything. They wake up wanting to save the world.
Real cynics exist. But they're rare. A handful of people who know the game is rigged, play it anyway, and laugh about it in private.
Everyone else is a believer.
And most of the puppets are believers precisely because they were formatted. The same schools, the same universities, the same newspapers, the same dinner parties, for decades. Nobody had to give them orders. The software was installed early and it runs on its own.
What does that software teach above all? That progress has collateral damage. And that collateral damage is acceptable.
That one idea unlocks everything.
It's why they can look at illegal immigration and not see a problem. They see the stats. They see the neighborhoods. They see the victims. And they file it all under collateral damage. Regrettable, marginal, the price of being on the right side of history. A price, conveniently, always paid by someone else. Someone they'll never meet, in a neighborhood they'll never live in.
That isn't cynicism. A cynic at least knows he's lying. This is faith. And faith is far more dangerous.
You can negotiate with a cynic. He responds to incentives. A believer responds to his conscience, and his conscience was written by the system.
Ray Dalio saw 2008 coming. He went to Washington and sat down with the Treasury and the White House. What terrified him wasn't uncovering a plot. It was realizing that nobody was really flying the plane.
That's the real picture. Not a cockpit full of villains. An empty cockpit, and a cabin full of true believers convinced the autopilot is taking them somewhere good.
Remember the hand on the dial? It isn't a monster. It's a believer who sincerely thinks the water is good for you.
You can't shame a believer. You can't bribe him. You can only outbuild him.
This is one of those small things that pisses me off. Every downgrade of the civic aesthetic is a small one- uglier lampposts, tarmac patches in the cobbles, cheap looking plastic shopfronts, but cumulatively together they all drastically worsen the look of the British street.
@Kettle_of_Smeg I see we're still on 'the right way to persuade the other side around to my way of thinking is to be as sanctimonious, condescending and dismissive as is humanly possible'.
This got tiresome, oh, about a decade ago.
