The phrase “people affected by social determinants of health” seems to have caught on as a way of referring to marginalized populations. Y’all — everyone is a person affected by social determinants of health. That Ivy League degree you have? That’s a social determinant of health!

Huge policy push right now to expand Medicaid home- and community-based services (HCBS), which we know benefit care recipients (!). However, this paper makes the important point that HCBS also benefit caregivers. Need to think broadly about benefits when evaluating HCBS. 2/3

We need a home care & eldercare system that doesn't rely on reams of unpaid & underpaid feminized labor or on institutionalizing people with disabilities. Our current "system" is harming caregivers' health and, as the population ages, it's falling apart at the seams.

Funding for #HCBS is a gender justice issue, a disability justice issue, and a racial justice issue. Family caregivers, mainly women, provide 75%-90% of all care for people with ADL limits. They are unpaid & undervalued, their health is suffering, & the system is unsustainable.

You can't ask whether the US pandemic response was a failure, you have to ask for whom it failed. The stock and real estate markets went up, fewer than 5,000 college-educated white people under 65 died, capital retained power over labor, and it succeeded as a eugenics project.
