CBS is expecting a new head writer to be in place with new storylines ready to go when their "fall season premiere" takes place in late September/early October.

That said, I've NEVER heard of a head writer willingly stepping down without announcing their retirement outright, particularly one who, just weeks earlier, "stepped down" as executive producer. All of it is questionable and not at all believable.
