For many of us, including me, Najeeb was never just a missing student.

We were college students then. Students with Muslim names. Students harassed day in and day out by Hindu right wing students, targeted for social media posts critical of the government and Hindutva. We were all Najeeb. Or at least we feared that we, too, could be forcibly disappeared.

We survived.

Najeeb’s memory cannot be allowed to fade. He was a university student in the national capital. There were clear suspects in his case. They had names. Yet no one has been held accountable.

His mother, Fatima Nafees, is not just a Muslim woman from a village in Uttar Pradesh. We watched her become a leader. She led marches through the national capital. She delivered fiery speeches. She confronted the police. She is our leader.

I remember the day Fatima Nafees came to our room in Ghaffar Manzil. We lived on the fourth floor, and there was no lift. She climbed the stairs, sat with us and had tea. When someone asked why she had climbed all the way to the fourth floor, she said, “I can climb mountains to demand justice.”

परवेज़ परवाज़ नहीं रहे।

योगी आदित्यनाथ के खिलाफ दंगा भड़काऊ कृत्यों की एफआईआर कराने वाले।

उनके खिलाफ लोअर कोर्ट से लेकर हाईकोर्ट और सुप्रीम कोर्ट तक लड़ने वाले।

गोरखपुर जेल के भीतर उनकी मृत्यु हो गई। 

वो गोरखपुर में साल 2007 था। गोरखपुर हिंदू-मुस्लिम दंगों की आंच में झुलस रहा था। इस पूरे मामले केंद्र में योगी आदित्यनाथ थे। मैं नेटवर्क 18 का यूपी ब्यूरो चीफ था। गोरखपुर दंगा कवर करने गया था। परवेज़ परवाज़ से पहली मुलाकात तभी हुई थी।

गोरखपुर के तुर्कमानपुर की उन पेचीदा गलियों में परवेज़ भाई लिखते-पढ़ते मिले थे। आप ये जानकर दंग रह जाएंगे कि वे उस दौर में अपने यूट्यूब चैनल से लेकर अखबार तक पर सक्रिय थे, जब यूट्यूब चैनलों का कहीं जिक्र तक नहीं होता था।

योगी आदित्यनाथ पर जिस दंगा भड़काऊ भाषण का आरोप लगा था, उसे उस दौर में उनके ही कैमरे ने दर्ज किया था। इस दौर में राजनीति की भट्ठी में जमकर हिंदू मुसलमान का ईंधन फूंका गया। गोरखपुर में हिंसा हुई। जान गई। योगी आदित्यनाथ पर पुलिस का शिंकजा कसा। योगी संसद में फूट फूटकर रोए।

परवेज़ परवाज़ इलाहाबाद हाईकोर्ट तक गए। योगी आदित्यनाथ पर कानूनी कार्यवाही मुकम्मल कराई। उनसे उस दौरान कई बार बातें हुईं, कई बार मुलाकात हुई। बेफिक्र। बेलौस। बेपरवाह परवेज़ परवाज़। स्टोरियां करते, स्टोरियां देखते। टीवी के पर्दे पर देखा कुछ भी पसंद आता तो तुरंत फोन करते। अपनी राय देते।

गोरखपुर में रहकर योगी आदित्यनाथ को ललकारना कोई मामूली बात नहीं थी। वे इसके अंजाम से वाकिफ थे, मगर फिर भी लड़ते रहने के जुनून में मुब्तिला थे।

साल 2017 आया। तस्वीर बदली। योगी सत्ता में आए। मार्च 2017 में योगी ने शपथ ली। अगले ही महीने यानि अप्रैल 2017 में हाता पर गोरखपुर पुलिस का छापा पड़ा। हाता यानि पंडित हरिशंकर तिवारी का गढ़, जिनकी योगी आदित्यनाथ से दुश्मनी जगज़ाहिर रही।

हाता निशाने पर आ चुका था। परवेज़ परवाज़ को भी अपने खिलाफ एक्शन का अंदेशा सताने लगा था। उनका अंदेशा सही साबित हुआ। शुरुआत हुई उसी मुकदमे से जो परवेज़ परवाज़ ने योगी आदित्यनाथ के खिलाफ दर्ज कराया था। योगी आदित्यनाथ ने सत्ता संभालने के बाद सबसे प्राथमिकता के आधार पर जो काम किया, वो अपने खिलाफ मुकदमे वापिस लेने का था।

ये वही साल था जिस साल योगी पहली बार यूपी के मुख्यमंत्री बने थे। उसी साल दिसंबर में योगी सरकार ने सरकार के मुखिया यानि योगी आदित्यनाथ पर से गंभीर मुकदमे वापिस लेने की प्रक्रिया शुरू कर दी। दिलचस्प बात ये रही कि गृह मंत्रालय तब भी योगी आदित्यनाथ के पास था और आज भी है। 

परवेज़ परवाज़ इसके खिलाफ भी लड़े। मगर नतीजा सिफर रहा। एक ओर योगी आदित्यनाथ ने खुद पर से मुकदमे वापिस लिए, और दूसरी ओर परवेज़ परवाज़ की रिकार्डेड योगी आदित्यनाथ के भाषण वाली वो सीडी, जिस पर योगी बुरी तरह मुश्किलों में घिरे थे, doctored यानि छेड़छाड़ वाली करार दी गई।

साल 2018 में परवेज़ परवाज़ पर गैंगरेप का मुकदमा दर्ज होता है। दो साल के भीतर उन्हें आजीवन कारावास हो गई। जेल में रहते हुए परवेज परवाज़ को एक और सज़ा हुई।

ये साल 2024 था। दिलचस्प बात ये थी कि योगी आदित्यनाथ समेत जिन लोगों के खिलाफ उन्होंने मुकदमा दर्ज कराया था, उन्हीं को बदनाम करने के आरोप में परवेज़ परवाज़ को 7 साल की सज़ा हुई। परवेज़ परवाज़ ने इन्हीं सज़ाओं को काटते हुए जेल में ही अपनी आखिरी सांस ली।

मुझे याद है कि उस दौर में परवेज़ परवाज़ से कई लोग मज़ाक में कहते थे कि गोरखपुर में रहना है तो योगी योगी कहना है। परवेज़ भाई इसके जवाब में मुस्कुराते हुए सिर्फ इतना कहते थे कि जो लोग योगी योगी नहीं कहते हैं, वे भी तो गोरखपुर में रहते हैं।

उनकी इस एक बात में बहुत बड़ा संदेश छुपा था कि कोई शहर, कोई प्रदेश या फिर कोई देश किसी की बपौती नहीं होता। ये सिर्फ वक्त का तकाजा होता है।

ये सत्ता, ये स्टेट पॉवर, ये मशीनरी का खुल्लम खुल्ला मिसयूज करने की रवायत, जिससे भी दुश्मनी पालो, उसे मिसयूज ऑफ पॉवर के जरिए सारी हदों को पार करते हुए नेस्तनाबूद कर देने की आदत....,

ये सब एक रोज़ उसी वक्त की मार के आगे घुटनों पर आ जाते हैं।

था कल तलक दिमाग़ जिन्हें ताज-ओ-तख़्त का"

इस दौरे गर्दिश में भी और इस दौर के बाद भी, जब भी सत्ता के खिलाफ़ बेझिझक उठने वाली जुनून भरी आवाज़ों का ज़िक्र किया जाएगा,

परवेज़ परवाज़ को याद किया जाएगा!!

इस सरकार की पहचान यही है: पीड़ितों की आवाज़ दबा दो, सवाल करने वालों को हटा दो।

पर न्याय की लड़ाई न दबेगी, न रुकेगी।

For the fourth consecutive day, the RWPI and Disha tried to march from Connaught Place to Jantar Mantar. They were once again stopped by police, who refused to listen to their plea to be allowed to march in single file, without disrupting traffic. During this standoff, a group of around twenty men, claiming to be local shopkeepers, confronted the protesters. An altercation ensued, until the police separated the two sides. When women paramilitary personnel arrived at the scene, the protesters were detained once again.
