Four Israeli athletes will not compete in Saturday’s Europe Triathlon Cup in Londonderry after the North West Triathlon Club objected to their participation.

DUP assembly member Julie Middleton condemned the decision as “an awful reflection on Londonderry,” adding: “An international sporting event that should showcase our city’s hospitality and openness has instead become associated with the exclusion of athletes because they are Israeli.”

Organizers confirmed: “There will be no Israeli representation competing at this event.”

A man has been handed a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to sending offensive messages threatening synagogues and Jewish businesses earlier this summer.

Michael Brown, 45, was arrested after posting a since-deleted comment beneath a Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign Facebook post stating: “It’s about time to target local synagogues and Jewish businesses with over ripe fruit and stink bombs.” He published the post on 28th February, the day that the United States and Israel launched an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He also asked, “Does anyone have a good recipe for roasted synagogue?” and said “Let’s all buy a pack of 6 eggs and pelt the local synagogues.”

Mr Brown reportedly referred to his comments as a “joke” in a police interview.

The judge presiding over the case at Westminster Magistrates’ Court said that the offence was aggravated by racial hostility, and that it would be “inevitable” that a member of the Jewish community would be “alarmed” by his post.

Nevertheless, he was handed only an eight week prison sentence that is suspended for one year.

Mr Brown was also issued fifteen rehabilitation activity days and 80 hours of unpaid work.

There is nothing funny about threatening synagogues and Jewish businesses. Offenders inciting anti-Jewish hate must receive harsher sentences in order to establish deterrence.

“A strategic consensus between Zionist groups and fascist groups.”

According to @Telegraph, The Royal Geographical Society (RGS) @RGS_IBG has published a so-called academic paper which attributes the riots following the 2024 Southport attack to “Zionist financiers”.

The paper, entitled “The United Kingdom’s first anti-Muslim pogroms in a context of genocidal Islamophobia in Gaza”, was authored by Dr Kawtar Najib, a lecturer in human geography at @LivUni.

It apparently speculates over a “strategic consensus between Zionist groups and fascist groups”, and suggests that the “white supremacist ideology” of far-right protests is “at the heart of the Zionist project”.

Astonishingly, the paper underwent a double-blind peer review process which involved two reviewers and was overseen by a journal editor, before publication.

Senior academics have rightly condemned the paper for peddling “age-old, notorious racist ideas”, and have called for the resignation of the Chairman of an upcoming RGS international conference, Professor Hopkins, for his involvement in its editorial process.

We echo those calls.

Let’s be clear: Zionism is the belief that Jews have the same right to self-determination afforded to all other peoples of the world under Article 1 of the UN Charter. 80% of British Jews consider themselves to be Zionists; only 6% do not, according to our polling.

The idea that Zionism could be conflated with white supremacy is an insulting distortion of its true meaning. The notion that Zionist ‘finance’ – another trope – was behind the riots is a ludicrous and racist conspiracy theory that one would expect to find in the dark corners of the internet, not in what was once a prestigious academic journal.

It says much about the state of academia – its biases and poor standards – that such a paper could be written, reviewed by peers and approved by editors.

Irresponsible publications like these inflame hostilities towards British Jews, and bring the academic sector into disrepute.
