I had booked a cab from Kanakapura to my home in Indiranagar. It was a white Swift Dzire. My driver was a short guy in his mid thirties. I reluctantly asked him in Hindi if he was native to Bangalore. He said no, but he was a Kannadiga from Hubli.

He told me he likes working in Bangalore. All of his friends are here. His wife and two kids are also here and he gets to eat home cooked food every day. He told me that he used to drive an auto, but three months ago he bought this car for ₹11 lakh. It is on EMI. He pays ₹16,000 every month.

I asked him if driving a cab pays more than driving an auto. He said not really. But a cab can go to the airport and on NICE Road. It is better during bad weather. And it is simply more comfortable.

Our entire conversation was in Hindi. He asked me if I can speak Kannada. I said, "Swalpa swalpa, count kar sakta hu till 10 in Kannada".

Then he wanted to play some music. He asked me if I would prefer Hindi songs. I told him to play whatever he liked. He played old Hindi songs from DDLJ. We reached Indiranagar listening to "Tujhe Dekha Toh".

Social media amplifies hatred so much that it can make you believe everyone in Bangalore is fighting over language. Then you step outside, get into a random cab or auto, and realise how different real life is.

لقد لعبنا نهائي كأس العالم، وأكرر: إسبانيا كانت الأفضل، لعبت بشكل أفضل، واستحقت الفوز بالكأس. ولا يوجد ما يمكن إضافته بعد ذلك ".
