Skill vs Will — What Really Drives Success?
Skill or Will — which one matters more?
This is an interesting question, especially when we look at people who succeed in leadership and business.
Skill is important.
It gives you the knowledge, competence and ability to perform a job.
But will is what makes you use that skill consistently.
You may have a highly skilled professional who knows exactly what needs to be done—but lacks the hunger, ownership or perseverance to actually do it.
On the other hand, someone with limited skills but a strong will can:
• Learn what they don’t know
• Take ownership instead of making excuses
• Keep going when the situation gets difficult
• Learn from failures rather than being defined by them
• Push beyond their comfort zone
• Build the skills required along the journey
This is why I believe:
Skill determines your starting capability.
Will determines your eventual potential.
In organisations, we often focus heavily on competence while evaluating people.
But when identifying future leaders, we should also look at something deeper:
Do they have the will to learn?
The will to take responsibility?
The will to make difficult decisions?
The will to stand up when things go wrong?
And most importantly—the will to keep going when nobody is watching?
Because skills can be acquired.
Will is much harder to develop.
The best professionals, however, don’t choose between the two.
They continuously build their Skill, strengthen their Will, and protect their Character.
Because:
Skill can make you capable.
Will can make you unstoppable.
Character determines whether you use both responsibly.
That’s where real leadership begins.
