If you believe free speech is for you but not your political opponents, you're illiberal.
If no contrary evidence could change your beliefs, you're a fundamentalist.
If you believe the state should punish those with contrary views, you're a totalitarian.
If you believe political opponents should be punished with violence or death, you're a terrorist.
Some of you may remember that I have an elderly neighbor (late 80s) whose wife passed away in October. Since then, I’ve been bringing him dinner on Saturdays. It’s usually that I make a bit extra of what we are eating for dinner and set some aside for him. Sometimes I make something else for him if we have dinner plans. We chat for a bit, about lots of different things and I think we have a nice friendship developing. He always walks over with his cane and gives me a hug. All in all, it’s about 30 minutes to an hour each week of my time.
Today I went over and said “I really hope you like it”. And he said “oh I always do!” And then added: “you know, you’re the only one who comes by and especially now that [other neighbor] has moved.”
I know he has family that comes by from time to time, but I think he just meant that no one in the neighborhood checks on him. And I didn’t realize that. Anyway, he is such an affectionate and kind man. It’s really a shame. I told him I’ll make more of an effort to come by more often and he seemed really happy about that. He expressed that it’s been pretty lonely.
So maybe this is your gentle reminder to check on the people in your neighborhood who might really need it, especially the elderly who have trouble getting around and who may be widowed. It really takes so little effort and it can make so much in the lives of the people directly around you.
@serenityposting@bumbadum14 I can attest to that! I was charged $150 for waiting in the ER for over an hour, had my "vitals," taken 2x (blood pressure and temp), and didn't get what i came in for because "i didn't show signs of stroke"... went home, got the $150 bill, which my insurance refused to pay...
