Playing a bit against type here but I will say that the liminal spaces aesthetic is actually one of the best modes for AI to operate in because it naturally produces material with exactly that warped, uncanny, dead-eyed, almost human character. Even where nothing is glaringly off it still lacks something, namely a soul. In fact I’ll go so far as to say that what made the original Backrooms image so mesmerizing was that it stood in for a whole range of environments that had been technically built by people but actually infested by the industrial logic of mass production to such an extent that they took on exactly that glitching, nauseous, “how do you do fellow humans” character that we would later find ourselves tormented by in the digital age. This was and remains a whole architectural anti-idiom, a way that buildings and rooms in late modernity had lost the wholesome relation to the human soul they had in the classical pre-war mode. The abandoned movie theater, the spastic carpeting patterns of a worn-down Chuck E. Cheese—these are the spatial equivalent of a deflated human-shaped balloon, their organization eerily like that of the Objective Room in C.S. Lewis’s That Hideous Strength. In fact the scariest part of that scene is where the main guy realizes the dots on the ceiling are arranged just so as to constantly suggest a pattern without ever resolving into one. Basically every ceiling in every high school classroom I ever sat in was made of material just like that. AI-generated imagery, like so much online, is only a hyper-real extension of that strangely unmoored look, floating free of any grounded human reference point but always groping for one and never quite landing. My favorite AI creators, almost all of whom make horror or fantasy shorts on TikTok, all recognize this quality in the machine at least instinctively and are using it accordingly. I think it’s because good artists see AI as having aesthetic properties in its own right and are using it like a color rather than the whole palate. It’s a huge if subtle difference: Uncreative people think of it as a creativity machine. But genuine creatives see it as raw material for creativity, like a particular kind of marble rather than like the art of sculpture itself or worse yet, like a sculptor.
