Please share widely and tell @POTUS: Close Guantanamo for good.
NYC brings back the Death Penalty. The last time 13 people were executed in NY: 1949. This year, 2021, 13 people killed by NYC jail, most for not having enough $ to pay bail. District Attorneys & Judges could stop this now. #endcashbail#closerikers https://t.co/zsxE7zaTKv
you should read this piece which gives insight into a typical day in my ‘office’ (spoiler alert - bail is usually set but not usually paid) #FreeThemAll
NEW: As Rikers suffers a surge in deaths and COVID cases, today in Manhattan Judge Herbert Moses set a $2K bail for a 57-year-old accused of stealing bed comforters. His attorney says the man is currently receiving cancer treatment.

Thread: When working on bail in Alabama, we found a man trapped in jail for cocaine possession because he couldn't pay $500 cash. He had been there for 3 years, and the system had forgotten to give him a lawyer. What happened to him is important. (1)
To our dear community-

Trump callously lied this morning on Twitter about our friend @MartinGugino, the 75-year-old shoved by the Buffalo police. @JeremyVaron exposes the person Martin really is and what is *truly* at stake in this moment:

the tweets of @realDonaldTrump are unremarkable in their tenuous relationship to truth & his tweet about my friend Martin Gugino is no exception. Martin is a kind & gentle man who spends time advocating for & with others. Add him to the long list deserving a Presidential apology.
NYC Criminal Court Video Arraignments in the age of #Covid19. Tonight saw the first arraignment by video feed in NYC crim court. This will apparently be the reality of arraignments in criminal court for some time. ‘Everyone take their place’ the judge exclaims. 1/6

In a theatre of the absurd, some things are more absurd than others. This case came through arraignments yesterday:
Excellent editorial by @latimesopinion about the need to close #Guantanamo and why the Supreme Court may have to weigh in (again) to end lifetime detention w/o charge:

A man is on trial this week for giving migrants water and shelter at Arizona’s deadliest desert crossing, where hundreds have died of thirst. He faces a 20 year sentence. It would be the first time a humanitarian worker on the border was sent to prison. https://t.co/vEAvCcliQv
not every day does your trial judge read the first amendment as part of his decision from the bench! a victory for the #Ramapough & for all of us. grateful to be part of the team on these cases.
BREAKING: A Superior Court ruling in New Jersey categorically rejected an injunction requested by the Ramapo Hunt and Polo Club that would have prohibited the Ramapough Lenape Nation from using their land for religious practice.
It costs the city $22,000 but the human cost is much greater - subjecting the accused person to inhumane and traumatic jail conditions, separated from loved ones, potential job and/or housing loss & worse case outcomes. All b/c the person didn’t have $2.75 to ride the train.
