How do we make public services better??
Often, by recognizing the many bureaucrats who want to do good work, empowering, and supporting them.

Most discourse about (even that which is ostensibly to celebrate) public service focuses on the negative stuff: hardship, sacrifice, putting oneself in harm's way, etc. But there is also so much of joy in serving the public & @NYCMayor is doing important work highlighting that.
Voters want agency and respect: it’s why politics must do relationships, not just delivery.
@rambletastic explores why agency and respect are crucial to understanding the political moment we find ourselves in, ahead of Britian Renewed 2026. https://t.co/8kXPEltZVi
Call for Nominations: The 2026 Levine Prize is now open! Books must be published in 2025 and submitted by March 15, 2026.

Please send a copy to all three committee members. Sponsored by @Gov_Journal &
@sog_rc27.
It’s been an honour to work with so many impressive people this year on a plan to stop failing pupils on free school meals. My report - out today - explains how we got into this situation and, more importantly, how to get out of it. https://t.co/nkaLcuoCPB

@bijurao You leave behind quite a legacy, Biju. The WB - and, frankly, the world - a better place for your presence. Can't wait to learn from what you get up to next.
Looking forward! Do join us if you're interested in how unlocking the energy of the many Mission Driven Bureaucrats already in the system can improve the lives of those the NHS serves & those who work there. At a time of fiscal constraint this lever all the more important
Thrilled to see this all star panel - and to hear @_JonathanSlater talk about his exciting work on reforming UK education I've been honored to play a role in supporting. For all the gloom in Labour-land these days, there are so many seeds of hope and real change to be nurtured.
Honoured to be a part of a new collection from @UCLPolicyLab@powertochange_@right_hereUK on Labour and the communitarian tradition, online here: https://t.co/6wmsMNtVWV On my way to Liverpool now - looking forward to a party conference full of thought, reflection, purpose.

@AiyarYamini & I argue in @ForeignPolicy that efficiency is a good thing, but not everything. The state is not just about 'delivery', but about judgment, engagement, equity, process. Thoughts very welcome; ungated here: https://t.co/lwXrtoDWJO
5 years ago today my family and I took a US Gov't evacuation flight as COVID swept the globe. Today USG is doing all it can not to help citizens, but to undermine the bureaucracy. To the #MissionDrivenBureaucrats who work for all of us around the globe: stay strong. We need you.
My family and I took an @StateDept evacuation flight from Senegal to the US on Friday. I’d like to say a few things about that, focusing on 1) The people who work for State (wonderful) & 2) The impression it left me about coordinated US airport response to COVID (disturbing). 1/
If you're in Ann Arbor this Monday (3/31, 4-5:30; free & open to the public) would be wonderful to see you @fordschool as Don Moynihan and I talk about empowering bureaucrats and the current political moment: https://t.co/XXQnNvp9N9. Hope to see you there!
SNF Agora’s first working paper, Relational State Capacity, written by SNF Faculty Affiliate Dan Honig @rambletastic, @K_Rahul_Sharma, and Mekhala Krishnamurthy, explores how trust between citizens and the state shapes governance. Read more: https://t.co/576V0AKktw
The social contract is fraying. Our states oft can't "deliver" - & when they do that doesn't seem to satisfy, with democratic backsliding and populism the result. We argue this is because 'capacity' is not just technical - it is also relationships between citizen & the state.👇
Wonderful to have our (Mekhala Krishnamurthy, @K_Rahul_Sharma, and my) first working paper on Relational State Capacity out in the world, courtesy of @SNFAgora! https://t.co/W6W6hKfwcp We look forward to comments/thoughts/reactions! 1/2

A lovely piece by @slomindfulness (strategy lead for the US President's Management Agenda) about the challenges #MissionDrivenBureaucrats in the US federal Gov't face; it's a marathon not a sprint.. https://t.co/xuHLdLopNu
