We lost another good officer, IAS Divya Mittal, today.

She resigned.

I still remember the case where people in a UP village were dependent on tanker water for 75 years. Villagers requested the MP and MLA many times, but nothing was done.

Then she brought tap water to the village. But she was transferred just because she didn’t invite the local MLA for the inauguration of the water project. After that, the pipeline supplying water to the village was vandalized by some goons.

It feels like our system is designed to punish honest officers.

She left her London job to serve the people of India. But today, she resigned.

I don’t know the reason for her resignation, but I am sure her honesty must have played a role.

The USS Abraham Lincoln was deployed in a combat zone in the Middle East, for more than 200 days.
Its 5,000 sailors complained constantly about shortages of hot water for showers, monotonous food of the same menu, problems with water and supplies, plumbing issues, low morale and deteriorating mental health. There were even multiple attempts by sailors to jump overboard.

Their relatives in America blamed Trump for the conditions of their sons, and Trump had to recall the USS Lincoln back to the USA.

Now compare this with Indian Army soldiers deployed at Siachen, especially during the six long hard winter months.
Freezing temperatures, -30°C to -40°C in extreme contions to -50 even. Frozen food. Blizzards, Snowstorms. Bone chilling cold that seeps into fingers and toes, causing frostbite and, in severe cases, the danger of amputation. No proper plumbing, no water. No regular showers. No mobile connectivity.

Do you hear about a single Indian Army soldier complain about the conditions in which he guards you ???
Their supplies are not even meant for luxury. They are essential requirements for soldiers defending one of the most inhospitable battlefields on earth.

And then we have people like that hippo, and others who objected to waiting because supplies were being transported to Soldiers at borders before the harsh winter made paths inaccessible !!

We don't deserve such an Army.

On one side, Hindi-speaking people in Maharashtra are being threatened that they will be beaten if they don’t speak Marathi.

On the other side, people from Bihar are helping people from Maharashtra who are stranded in Nepal, bringing them to safety, feeding them well, and sending them safely back home — without forcing them to speak Bhojpuri or Hindi.

This is what you call Bihari values and culture.❤️

You can abuse them, insult them, or make fun of them as much as you want, but when it comes to their guests, they never discriminate on the basis of language or region.

Just last year, their US headquarters faced a massive abuse scandal. Around 200 pastors were convicted of raping 500 children. In 2023, their director resigned over sexual abuse and trafficking of minors.

Every mobile phone call you have ever made was compressed before it left your phone.

Your voice does not travel. A mathematical description of your voice travels, and the phone at the other end rebuilds it.

The man who worked out how to do that was born in Kanpur.

His name is Bishnu Atal.

He was born on 10th May 1933. He took a physics degree at the University of Lucknow in 1952, then a diploma in electrical communication engineering at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1955. He taught acoustics there for 3 years.

In 1961 he joined Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, and stayed for 35 years.

The problem he worked on sounds dull until you understand what it prevents.

Sending a voice as raw sound uses an enormous amount of bandwidth. In the 1980s, as mobile phones spread, the networks began to fill up. There is only so much radio spectrum, and it cannot be manufactured.

Without compression, mobile telephony would have stayed a luxury for a small number of people. There would not have been enough room in the air for everyone.

Between 1966 and 1970 Atal developed what is called linear predictive coding.

The idea is elegant. Human speech is highly predictable. The sound you are making now is closely related to the sound you made a fraction of a second ago, because it is produced by the same throat and the same mouth shape.

So instead of sending the sound, you send a small set of numbers that describe how the sound is being produced, and the receiver uses them to reconstruct it.

His early version worked at 2,400 bits per second, which was extraordinarily small. The American military adopted it for secure telephones.

But it did not sound like a person. It was intelligible and slightly robotic.

He spent the next 15 years fixing that. In 1985, with Manfred Schroeder, he published the method called code excited linear prediction.

That one is in almost every digital cellular standard in the world. GSM. CDMA. Voice calls over the internet.

He holds 16 American patents and many international ones. He was made a Bell Labs Fellow in 1994. The American National Academy of Engineering elected him in 1987. In 2003 the Franklin Institute gave him the Benjamin Franklin Medal in electrical engineering.

The Franklin Institute wrote one line when they gave it to him.

The next time you make a call on your cell phone, think of Bishnu Atal.

Almost nobody does. In his own country, almost nobody knows the name at all.

The entire SC/ST creamy layer argument rests on a flawed assumption: that a substantial section of SC/ST population is affluent enough to have cornered reservation benefits at the expense of genuinely deserving candidates.

The Bihar Caste Census puts a number to this assumption. Only 1.72% of SCs and 2.53% of STs earn above 50,000 per month. That is the upper bound of what anyone could reasonably call a creamy layer, and I am already stretching the definition generously, since the existing OBC creamy layer threshold of 8 lakh per annum translates to roughly 67K per month, well above 50K.

So the creamy layer within SC/ST, by the most liberal reading of available data, is approximately 2% of their population. This largely follows from Bihar census but caste data from Telangana is also similar.

Now consider what actually follows from that number. If the argument is to exclude all Paswans from reservation because 2% among them have done well, that is precisely the logic used against GCs: denying benefits to an entire group because a section of it is affluent. SC/ST communities will recognise this immediately and they will not accept it.

If the narrower plan is to exclude only the creamy layer individuals rather than the whole caste, you have reduced the reserved pool by 2%. The remaining 98% is still eligible, still reserved, and the replacement queue behind them is deep and immediate. Not one additional seat opens for GC candidates. And at 2% turnover per generation, you are mathematically waiting 50 generations before reservation has run its course through the population. That is not reform. That is a rabbit hole with no exit.

This is why my position is straightforward. Abolish all reservations, including EWS reservation, which is constitutionally dubious on its own terms. Replace it with direct economic assistance to those who genuinely need it, regardless of caste. Target poverty, not identity. That is the only argument that is intellectually honest

British had commissioned various surveys b/w 1822-1838 to understand the Indian indigenous education system.

These surveys indicated that so-called "shudras" were in majority in indigenous schools.
Even dalit castes (panchamas) were going to school.
There were shudra & dalit teachers too.

These reports included:
1. Thomas Munro survey (Madras presidency, 1822-26): Shudras/panchamas were 60-70% in indigenous schools!
2. T.B Jervis survey (Bombay presidency, 1824-25): There were shudra students as well as shudra teachers
3. William Adam report (Bengal presidency, 1836-38): Bihar/Bengal had more than 1 lakh schools,, everywhere shudras were in majority! There were dalit teachers too!
