आदि शंकराचार्य ने बहुत छोटी उम्र में संन्यास ले लिया था। संन्यास के नियमों के अनुसार, वे प्रतिदिन किसी न किसी के घर जाकर 'भिक्षा' मांगते थे और जो मिलता था, उसी से अपना पेट भरते थे।
एक दिन, भिक्षा मांगते हुए वे एक अत्यंत जर्जर और टूटी-फूटी कुटिया के सामने पहुँचे। उस कुटिया में एक बूढ़ी ब्राह्मणी रहती थी। वह इतनी गरीब थी कि उसके पास पहनने क�� ठीक से वस्त्र नहीं थे और उसने कई दिनों से अन्न का दाना तक नहीं चखा था। बालक शंकराचार्य ने द्वार पर आवाज लगाई—"ॐ भवति भिक्षाम देहि" (हे माता! भिक्षा दीजिए)।

शंकराचार्य की आवाज सुनकर वह बूढ़ी महिला बाहर आई। सामने एक परम तेजस्वी बालक को भिक्षा मांगते देखकर उसकी आँखों में आंसू आ गए। वह अंदर दौड़ी कि बालक को कुछ खाने को दे, लेकिन कुटिया में अनाज का ��क दाना भी नहीं था। वह बर्तनों को खंगालने लगी कि कहीं कुछ मिल जाए।
ढूँढते-ढूँढते उसे एक कोने में एक छोटा सा, सूखा और पुराना आंवला मिला। वह उस आंवले को लेकर बाहर आई, लेकिन उसे शर्म आ रही थी कि वह इतने बड़े संत को यह सूखा आंवला कैसे दे। लेकिन उसके मन में भाव सच्चा था। उसने कांपते हाथों से वह आंवला शंकराचार्य के भिक्षा पात्र में डाल दिया और रोते हुए अपने भाग्य को कोसने लगी।

उस वृद्ध महिला की निष्कप�� ममता और दरिद्रता को देखकर बाल शंकराचार्य का हृदय दहल गया। उन्होंने वहीं खड़े-खड़े अपनी आँखें बंद कीं और साक्षात धन की देवी माता लक्ष्मी का आह्वान किया।
शंकराचार्य की पुकार पर माता लक्ष्मी अदृश्य रूप से वहाँ प्रकट हुईं। शंकराचार्य ने कहा, "हे मां! इस परम कृपालु वृद्धा की दरिद्रता को अभी नष्ट करो। इसके पास खाने को कुछ नहीं है, फिर भी इसने ��पना सर्वस्व मुझे दान कर दिया।
तब माता लक्ष्मी ने कहा, "हे बालक! मैं चाहकर भी इस जन्म में इसे धन नहीं दे सकती। इस महिला ने अपने पूर्व जन्मों में कभी किसी को एक रुपए का भी दान नहीं किया। कर्मों के अकाट्य नियम के अनुसार, जिसने पहले कभी दान नहीं किया, उसे इस जन्म में समृद्धि नहीं मिल सकती। यह इसका प्रारब्ध (भाग्य) है।

माता लक्ष्मी की बात सुनकर आदि शंकराचार्य ने एक अद्भुत तर्क दिया। उन्होंने कहा:
"हे माता! आप कहती हैं कि इसने पूर्व जन्म में दान नहीं किया। लेकिन इस जन्म में इसके पास जो आखिरी वस्तु थी—वह सूखा आंवला—वह इसने बिना किसी स्वार्थ के मुझे दान कर दिया है। क्या इस महा-दान के बदले आप इसके पूर्व जन्म के सारे पाप नष्ट नहीं कर सकतीं? आपकी कृपा तो कर्मों के बंधनों से भी बड़ी है।
इतना कहकर शंकराचार्य ने माता लक्ष्मी की स्तुति में मौके पर ही २१ श्लोकों की रचना की, जिसे आज पूरी दुनिया 'कनकधारा स्तोत्र' के नाम से जानती है। इस स्तोत्र का एक-एक शब्द मां लक्ष्मी के हृदय को पिघलाने वाला था।

शंकराचार्य के मुख से कनकधारा स्तोत्र के दिव्य मंत्रों को सुनकर माता लक्ष्मी पूरी तरह भावुक हो उठीं। उनके हृदय में उस बूढ़ी मां के लिए ममता जाग उठी।और उसी क्षण उस झोपड़ी के भीतर एक महा-चमत्कार हुआ!
आकाश से रिमझिम बारिश की तरह शुद्ध सोने के आंवलों की वर्षा होने लगी। देखते ही देखते वह फटी-पुरानी कुटिया सोने के सिक्कों और आंवलों से भर गई। वह गरीब महिला रातों-रात राजाओं जैसी समृद��ध हो गई।

यह घटना दक्षिण भारत के केरल की है, जब बाल संन्यासी आदि शंकराचार्य भिक्षा मांग रहे थे।

आज भी इस घटना के प्रतीक स्वरूप दक्षिण भारत में 'कनकधारा' नाम का प्राचीन स्थान और मंदिर मौजूद है।

It's a shame no major film has been made about Biju Patnaik. He lived a life that sounds almost fictional:

In 1938, he flew his entire wedding procession by aircraft to Rawalpindi for his marriage to Gyanwati Sethi (who became the first Indian woman to hold a commercial pilot’s license, and the couple later flew daring missions together.)

While serving in the Royal Indian Air Force (including as head of Air Transport Command), he secretly ferried freedom fighters like Jayaprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, and Aruna Asaf Ali to their hideouts. He also airdropped 'Quit India' leaflets to Indian troops while evacuating British families.

The British once jailed him for transporting nationalist leaders and distributing anti-British literature but also honored him for bravery in evacuating civilians from Japanese-occupied Burma.

During WWII, he flew daring missions delivering arms and supplies to Soviet forces in Stalingrad, and over the treacherous 'Hump' route to China in
support of Chinese Nationalist forces against the Japanese.

In July 1947, he and his wife flew a Dakota into Indonesia, landed on an improvised airstrip while evading Dutch anti-aircraft fire, rescued Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir, refuelled using abandoned Japanese fuel, and flew him safely to India via Singapore.

A couple of months later, during the Pakistani invasion of Kashmir, he airlifted one of the first Indian troops into Srinagar.

The same year he founded Kalinga Airlines, one of India's earliest private airlines.

As Odisha CM post-1962 India-China war, he secretly visited CIA headquarters at Langley to forge a covert India-US partnership against China, which led to the Aviation Research Centre (ARC) at Charbatia, which supported U-2 recon missions over Tibet.

He was also a legendary administrator and statesman, laying much of the foundation of Odisha's industrial empire (mines, ports, heavy industries etc).

When he passed away, Indonesia observed 7 days of state mourning. Russia observed 1 day. He remains the only person in Indian history whose body was draped in the national flags of 3 nations - India, Indonesia, and Russia.

Few public figures have left such a footprint.

His extraordinary life needs to be brought to the big screen.
