Today, 16 years later, he returned to present the trophy to a new generation of Spanish champions who have written their own history. ๐ช๐ธโจ

As 2025 unfolds, the Universitรฉ Saint Joseph (@USJLiban) is ending a year-long celebration of its 150th anniversary. Throughout the neighborhoods surrounding the university, photographs of well-known alumni have been hung from lampposts, a gallery of portraits that is a highlight of this commemoration.
A similar scene played out in 2016-2017 when the American University of Beirut (@AUB_Lebanon) celebrated its 150th. Before USJ, AUB had put up photographs of its own distinguished alumni, this time on the Beirut Corniche.
The two universities, though distinct in their origins share remarkable parallels. For part of their history, they were the only modern universities in the Arab world, and they were both rooted in Beirut. They competed, yet their rivalry elevated Beirut to a regional center of education, drawing students from across the Arab world and beyond.
Their anniversary themes encapsulate their identities. AUBโs โWe Make History,โ celebrated its โHistory Makers.โ USJโs theme, โNos Racines, Notre Avenirโ (โOur Roots, Our Futureโ), ties its heritage to a vision for what lies ahead. Both themes underscore a shared mission of honoring the past while shaping the future.
In a country often tested by turmoil, wars, and exodus, USJ and AUB remain pillars of hope. Their alumni adorning Beirutโs streets are a testimony that talent can still emerge from this small Mediterranean land. The value of both lies not just in the academic degrees they provide but in a legacy of enlightenment that transcends borders, and in which we can still sometimes hear a faint echo of a country that had been the heartbeat of Arab modernity.
I had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Makram Rabah for a discussion on ๐๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐ค๐ก๐ช๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐ค๐ ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ-๐๐๐ ๐๐ฃ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐๐จ ๐๐ฃ ๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ค๐ฃ: ๐๐๐จ๐จ๐ค๐ฃ๐จ ๐๐ง๐ค๐ข ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ฉ, organized by the National Blocโs Youth and Student Sector in Beirut.
We explored 150 years of student activism, with a focus on AUB, USJ, and the Lebanese Universityโlooking forward to more conversations ahead!
Oh, and you should definitely check out his bookโI canโt recommend it enough!
