Industrial Designers have taken on different shapes. Model Makers, CAD Technicians, Experience Designers, User Interface Designers. It's so much more than that.
good questions! I'll try to answer them all.
preface: I solved a problem, it was novel. Patent was sought out later (didn't look to patent for the sake of it)
work helped a lot - was given a problem to solve. spent a while iterating solutions, and one stood out as well-designed & novel compared to competitor solutions.
I don't recommend searching your ideas on google (https://t.co/Zo6xGvi08b) but if you do - search up the problem not your solution - we use a product called anaqua which allows you to search prior arts confidentally (google logs your ip & search history + theyre a direct competitor to my work so Im less incentivized to use it)
privacy is pretty critical so when I used ai - I was selective (local models & services offered within the company). I predominantly used it to verify the novelty and differentiate my invention with other prior arts.
I started this process 2 years ago so ai wasn't as helpful as it could be now. I can see it as a collaborator in every step of the process - 2 years ago, I sought out subject matter experts within my company to help me validate implementation details since a big portion of the patent is explaining how it works in detail (numbered steps, diagrams, and examples).
we have a process in place for engaging with lawyers at work - essentially we have to prove to a committee of inventors (within the company) that the invention is in fact an invention - if I wasn't affiliated with a company, I would consult a lawyer as I build the patent application since they do provide a set of guidelines which cuts a lot of bloat in the application. after sending the patent to them, they'll be doing a deeper dive on prior arts and you'll need to prove to them the novelty for every artifact they find (this part is lengthy which is why I used ai to help me)
