How brilliant rejuvenation of rivers transforms rural Gujarat 🇮🇳.
Amreli district in Gujarat untill very recently was a desolate place. The rivers were silted and dead. It was very dry. Young people left for Surat and other cities.
Then something incredible happened - the miracle of water. Dholakia Foundation, supported by the government of Gujarat, built 180 dams and lakes. They widened and deepened the riverbeds. Water is back - big time. The monsoon starts this week.
With water farmers who depended on one crop, can have two or three. Fruits like mango grow everywhere. Trees are planted across Amreli. With forests deer and wild pigs return. And with access to prey lions start inhabiting the region, outside the national park. This is the endangered Asian lion, so the increase in lion numbers matters a lot.
Congrats with great work in Amreli. Please connect to Dholakia Foundation for inspiration if you wish to replicate elsewhere.
Water doesn’t have an expiry date. In cities, yesterday’s water is often thrown away. In drought-hit regions, the same water is treasured and reused.
With El Niño contributing to warmer temperatures and concerns over delayed monsoons, conserving water is a responsibility.
Save water. Every drop counts. 💧
I moved to AhD in 2013 and chose to be critical of AhD’s story to discount positive bias. There was a road a km from Vastrapur Lake, and they had to break it to fix some pipes. I closely observed the work to calculate how many days it would take to rebuild the road. I pass by that road daily. They finished the work around Sunday evening, and boom; there was a road on Monday morning. It felt like magic. I thought it must be a cut-and-paste low-quality road because how can one build a road in 12 hours? (Remember, I wanted to be critical). That road is in good condition today, with no potholes at all. I guess that just as a rotten system is hard to fix, a good system, once built, can thrive for a long time. It seems that some things have become default.
You have sweepers here who clean the roads before people wake up. Once, there was a heavy storm at midnight. The next morning, around 5:40 a.m., the campus was dirty: covered with leaves, branches, and trash brought in by the storm from outside. But as I stepped out of the campus, the sweeper had already cleaned the road and was busy spreading some white powder along the sides (disinfectant). The campus was yet to be cleaned, but all roads within a 15 km radius were sharp and clean. Can say for most of the main roads of AhD. I have personally witnessed this for at least 20+ areas of AhD, and they are not even posh areas, so to speak. I want to be critical, so I am 100% sure there must be deep interiors that need fixing.
There are so many food street areas, and they are all well-maintained. People also litter less here. You don't have pooja-related waste outside temples.
Currently, I am upset that the Gift City lane is 2 lanes instead of 4. It is good for the next 5 years. If the plan is big, then these 2 lanes are useless. There is one crazy speed breaker on the highway. Like, who does that? It took them more than 2 weeks to get the lights on the new highway, which should be the first thing (the central government project, so the state government still gets a clean chit)
PS: I am from Gurgaon; that city is a mess. No Government has ever taken GGN seriously.
🚨There is a silent Typhoid outbreak in India and Indians must start being cautious because Govt won’t.
