Why Velachery will flood again:

It’s early days for the northeast monsoon, and Velachery residents are already bracing for the worst. Haunted by the 2023 floods when they waded through neck-deep water, many are raising floors, lifting parking spaces, and rebuilding homes from scratch, spending lakhs. Water rose 5ft inside homes last year, prompting residents to rebuild 8ft higher at massive costs. Others have razed their houses, leaving ground floors only for parking.

At the centre of their fear lies Velachery lake, once a 255-acre flood buffer, now shrunk to 55 acres. Despite repeated Madras HC and NGT orders to demarcate and clear encroachments, WRD hasn’t acted. The department admits to identifying 955 encroachers but says eviction “may turn into a law-and-order issue.”

On ground, the lake is almost gone, with huts, shanties, and kutcha houses choking both sides of the 100-Feet Road. The Adambakkam end is a canal; the opposite stretch, a pond. The outfall remains carpeted in hyacinth; desilting hasn’t begun.

A neglected Velachery lake fuels flooding in AGS Colony, Venkateshwara Nagar, E B Colony, Dhandeeswaran Nagar, Baby Nagar, and Ayothi Colony. Water that should drain via Veerangal Odai to Pallikaranai now stagnates. The link drains are barely 3ft wide, carrying mostly sewage, while others taper off abruptly. Velachery’s surplus has three exits, to the Buckingham Canal (not desilted for years), via Veerangal Odai (blocked by hyacinth), and through Perungudi–Velachery station road drains that are just 10ft instead of 30ft.

Residents’ associations have now moved Madras High Court again, accusing officials of contempt and inaction.
