Artificial Photosynthesis: A Step Towards Synthetic Plant Cells
Plant chloroplasts perform two main photosynthetic processes: 1) Light reactions, creating ATP and NADPH. 2) Dark reactions, uses ATP/NADPH to convert CO2 into plant material.
Miller et al tried building a self-sustaining artificial photosynthesis system.
They transferred thylakoid membranes of spinach chloroplasts in tiny water droplets suspended in oil.
Inside these droplets, they also added 16 enzymes that form a completely artificial "CETCH pathway” that captures and process CO2.
They could adjust the composition of these droplets monitored the metabolic activity in real time by NADPH fluorescence.
When light was applied, the system successfully used the light energy to turn CO2 into glycolate (a basic building block) and created more ATP.
These artificial chloroplasts, could potentially be used to perform various complex biological processes and also sequester carbon.
It's also a step toward creating a self-sustaining artificial plant-like cell.
