Whenever we sit down to confer with a developing mathematician, we have to remind ourselves that the goal is to support the development of the young mathematicians sitting next to us.

It is not to fix the piece of mathematics.

*Memory* is incredibly interesting.

I've been studying it for a few years and hardly scratched the surface!

Here are 3 key things I've learned and what I think they might mean for teachers...

I’m an unabashed @joboaler fan. She is a visionary change agent. In these crazy, angry and divisive times, she finds herself viciously attacked by ardent proponents of the math ed status quo. Now she’s fighting back. I have her back and urge you to see https://t.co/pRdlADHCle

We cannot just hold up a model and assume that children see what we as adults see.

The math is not in the model.

The math is in the child’s head.

"It’s not teaching that causes learning, after all—as painful as it might be for us educators to realize. Learning is caused by learners attempting to do something and getting feedback on the attempt. So learners need endless feedback..."

“What do we need to do to help educators understand that the path to deep understanding is often not a straight line, and that to connect ideas to our lives, our own thinking –– goofy or not –– needs a chance to come out?” @ilana_horn https://t.co/cM23rCbhTx
