It's easy for us to celebrate "moral progress" when the price of such progress is concealed. We pat ourselves on the back for becoming better than our forebears, believing ourselves more evolved creatures. But what is the cost of our evolution?
We have moved past primitive violence. Globally: for wars of conquest have been made illegal by the elected elites. Societally: for we have handed the State a monopoly on violence in order to keep our hands sterile and clean. Vocationally: for we no longer need to shed animal blood ourselves in order to eat. And familially: our lives of luxury no longer demand obedience from children.
We're better than those Bronze Age, Old Testament practices now. The days of "an eye for an eye" and "spare the rod" are long gone. On the surface, our evolution may seem praiseworthy. Our lives are lived less and less on the primitive plane. The firelight that could burn a child's hand has become the LED. The butchering of the herd animal has become Door-Dashed dinner. We are being pulled out of the dirt, ash, and blood and into a cleaner, more cerebral, and digitized realm.
But our bodies are not made of circuits. As much as we try to forget it, our bodies are still made of muscle and blood. Our brains are still awash in hormonal brew. Our gut is still full of acid and bacteria.
What have we lost by starving ourselves of violence? Which hormonal receptors are atrophying? What covert potions and secret signals have we deprived ourselves of? A sudden springtime glut of insects signals the songbird to mate. The moonlight on the ocean tells the baby turtle where to go. A swift punch to the face will trigger fight or flight and spike testosterone.
Maybe it is the sterility of our lives, and the lack of violence we enjoy that has snuffed out our capacity for love and our instincts for reproduction. Love and violence are intertwined, for true love requires a willingness to kill the invader who seeks to conquer a home, the murderer who would end a beloved's life, or the adulterer who defiles a lover.
Can a man with no right to exercise violence or no willingness to mete it out truly love with his whole fleshly heart? In our glorious moral progress, maybe we have killed the Eros of the body and replaced him with a more civilized, cerebral, and limp-wristed impersonator. Maybe the cost of progress is greater than we could ever imagine.
The problem with these videos is that people HATE to be corrected or told they are wrong. What's required is an alternate narrative that gives people a reason to want a data center in their area.
1. Free heated community pool, funded by waste heat from the data center. This worked in Japan for garbage incinerators.
2. Year-round greenhouse, also powered by recovered heat, supplying schools and local food banks. This would be attractive in cold climates.
3. Free town WiFi, especially downtown, in parks, schools, and low-income areas. Starlonk perhaps?
4. Massive indoor sports dome, subsidized by the operator, open all winter. Velodrome? I can dream.
5. New rec center, gym, climbing wall, courts, teen space, coworking area. Hell yes. Build one in Seattle today, please.
6. Electric shuttle loop, connecting schools, downtown, senior housing, and parks. Obviously necessary.
7. Utility bill credits, real monthly credits for households, not abstract tax revenue. With a clear line item on the bill.
8. Free community college or trade scholarships, especially electrical, HVAC, etc., because data centers need electricians, HVAC techs, networking, and infrastructure talent.
9. Public EV charging plaza, with cheap charging for residents. Of course!
10. A “data center dividend,” annual cash payment or property tax rebate for residents. Like Alaska has.
And that is just off the top of my head. Who is running this AI PR campaign anyway? Call me, I have ideas.
Lost in the deluge of fertility discourse is the simple fact that the default state of the female is resistance. Because she is burdened with the costly large gamete, the female has no sense of duty towards reproduction and instead has the opposite: a steadfast obstinacy against it.
There are no charts and graphs that will inspire surrender. The difficult task of drawing fertility from the stubborn female is a primordial struggle waged not on the mind or heart but the amygdala.
But the male weapons which were developed for this millennia-old war are in a sorry state. In our enlightenment, we sought to bring equality between the sexes, and this required costly engineering. The social contract was rewritten and the legal codes reformed.
Now, the male goes out in search of a mate without his weapons of war. His plumage has been plucked, his talons clipped, and his fangs dulled. And what of the female? Not only is she as obstinate as ever, but she has the surgeon's hooks trained at her womb and the State's army aimed at her would-be suitor.
The price of equality will be extinction and no number of charts and graphs will change this.
I haven’t seen anyone with my take, so at great personal risk, I’m wading in:
- I have this ick
- I have played & enjoyed video games in the past
- I adore my husband, he’s the best
- I’m a lib
I want him to have fun and relax, but playing video games is a massive ick, (and I struggle with this!)
I think it’s because it’s a total waste of time, and it means he’s not doing something else I *know* he wants to be doing: the workshop sitting unused, the language learning app he bought a lifetime membership to, the books he wants to read, the walls he wants to climb, etc.
If he’s playing with friends, they don’t talk about anything other than the game (he says he doesn’t view it as bonding; it’s just like… a thing to do). If he’s playing by himself, he loses all sense of time and is liable to spend way more time gaming than *he says* he wants to. And that lack of control is a big turn-off for me
With almost any other leisure activity, there’s some upside, and when he does those things I think it’s extremely hot. When he plays video games, it’s ick. Not permanently. Just until he does something hot again
The only notable exception is that he brings his Switch when we travel. My libido/brain feels entirely neutral about that, presumably because you can’t really waste time on an airplane (?)
[If you’re tempted to make big pronouncements about our marriage, please search my tweets for “my husband” before replying]
I was so annoyed by this tweet that I spent the last week writing an entire children's book called The Insignificant Speck, which starts out telling this Reddit Atheist story ("You're just a speck, you're not special, nothing means anything"), but then takes a left turn halfway through, exploring the mathematical impossibility of life, how miraculous it is that anything exists at all, how an infinite sequence of stuff had to happen to produce you, how you are imbued with all of that magic, how the human experience is ablaze with the majesty and wonder of its Creator, and how your life has cosmic importance and is weighted with tremendous moral responsibility, and you owe your ancestors and your progeny the honor of living well and fully.
It's the children's picture book I want my kids to read more than any other. A based "Oh, the Places You'll Go" for our retarded age.
Anyone know any illustrators who'd want to collaborate on this?
The corollary is you simply need to do things no one else is willing to do. Find a relationship by actually pursuing someone. Walk in the front door to get a job.
A bespoke life is still open to everyone. The number of people that want to put in the footwork is lower than ever
The birth rate collapse is simple. We are guarded from death in nearly every meaningful way. The less of an effect death produces on those still living, the less we seek its antidote, which is new life. Death is shielded from us both in fact and appearance. Very few young people die. And when they do we are told to “go to therapy” rather than to “go forth and multiply.” Or when death is real the physical suffering is often eliminated with sedatives.
Public executions would fix the birth rate problem overnight. The more we experience shocking death the more we crave new life. This zombie-like way of life we have convinced ourselves is superior is ironically the one thing that is killing us.
Sleep in the house of your enemy and watch how you dream. the coward dies every night the brave man dies once. put your hand in the mouth of the dog that bit you and feel if he still wants to. the wound that won't heal is the door you won't enter. sit at the table of the man who hates you and eat slowly. God hides in the people you avoid. the body of your father is in the mirror and you keep looking away. your real name was spoken once in a dream and you forgot it on purpose. the devil you know is you and you knew that already. stop asking for signs you have received enough signs. the fire you fear is the fire you need. somewhere there is a room with everything you lost and you will not go there because then you would have to admit it is gone. pray with your teeth. forgive with your hands. die before you die so that when you die you do not die.
its literally impossible to possess aristotelian virtue. you have to be courageous, but not too courageous or youre reckless. you cant be stingy, but if you give away too much money, youre prodigal. if youre not friendly enough youre surly, if youre too friendly youre obsequious
The hydration revolution created a new guy. The "I gotta piss" guy
I gotta piss. I gotta piss. Wheres the bathroom? Is there a bathroom here? I gotta go now. I gotta piss
I can't believe a generation who get their news from 3 second dance videos on a Chinese propaganda app don't fully understand geopolitics, history or what gender they are.
Ladies and gentlemen, the supermarket reaches its apogee. 100% processed food. Nothing fresh. Every single product a plastic-wrapped offence against the life-giving bounty of God's glorious world.
Musician and producer Jacob Collier frequently experiments with audience during his tours. This is how he turns his entire concert audience into a choir, signalling at different sections to move up or down a note
Your grandchildren will go to school with the children of religious weirdos & immigrants, & no one else
Have there been any stronger selection effects, any tighter genetic bottleneck in human history?
The Black Death killed a third of Europe - this thing may *leave* a third
Well good point. Here's the thing, women are born not made, transgenders are mentally ill and society should never accept this as normal.
Now budlight gives me money.. and I just said that... I've been saying it my entire career... so? What do they support?
I'm an American. What is my concern with the desert people? Go to war, make peace.
It doesn't matter to me.
I'm not an a Israeli.. I'm not a palestinian. I'm an American. Open borders, under funded education, under paid employees. I DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES
