BREAKING: US Inflation just surged to 4.2%, the highest level since 2023.

US CPI hit 4.2% year over year in May, up from 3.8% last month. The entire spike is driven by energy prices from the Iran conflict, something the Fed cannot fix by raising rates.

The number the Fed actually watches is Core CPI, which strips out food and energy.

Core CPI came in at 0.2% MOM against an expectation of 0.3% and a previous reading of 0.4%.

Underlying inflation is cooling faster than markets were pricing in.

This gives the Fed breathing room. The headline number is hot because of oil. Oil prices are a geopolitical problem, not a monetary policy problem.

Two scenarios from here.

If the Iran ceasefire holds and oil corrects, the next CPI print could come in below 4%, opening the door for a rate cut.

If the conflict continues and oil spikes further, headline CPI could hit 4.5% or higher, forcing the Fed to hike in December.

Core CPI at 0.2% just changed the conversation. Whether it matters depends entirely on what happens with oil in the next 30 days.

The put-call ratio on South Korea's KOSPI 200 just hit 2.5, its highest level in 5 years, a level that has only appeared twice in the last 20 years, and both times the market crashed.

For every 1 investor betting the market goes up, 2.5 investors are now paying to protect themselves against further losses.

The last two times it reached this level were July 2007, when the KOSPI fell 17% the following month, and January 2021, when it fell 5% over the next three weeks.

This time the KOSPI has already crashed -13% in last 8 days and institutions are still aggressively buying crash protection.

They are not buying the dip. They are hedging against more downside.

On June 5, a sidecar was triggered halting program trading for 5 minutes. On June 8 and again today June 10, full circuit breakers were triggered halting all trading for 20 minutes each time.

There is no such thing as a “self-defense strike” when you are the initial aggressor. No state can invoke self-defense while stationing helicopters and drones along another country’s borders for the purpose of enforcing an unlawful naval blockade, systematically and repeatedly violating that country’s airspace, particularly when the entire operation is being conducted 8,000 miles from its own mainland.

Any military action undertaken by the initial aggressor in response to a state’s lawful exercise of self-defense is not "defensive" by any standard. It is merely a continuation of the original unlawful use of force and act of aggression.

Furthermore, attacking Iran’s water infrastructure in response to the downing of a single intruding helicopter cannot plausibly be described as “proportionate” either. Such an attack constitutes a serious war crime, both because it violates the principle of proportionality and because of the civilian nature of the targets.

It is highly suspicious that a U.S. Apache helicopter was targeted just one day after Iran and Israel traded strikes, disrupting a fragile ceasefire.

Think about the logic: Iran has never once denied an attack they actually committed.
They own their military actions.
Yet in this instance, they have explicitly denied carrying out the attack, suggesting instead that it may have been an accident or a technical failure.

On the flip side, look at the political reality: Trump faces immense domestic pressure from an American public that is deeply exhausted by foreign conflicts and entirely unwilling to sacrifice their children in a broader Middle East war on Israel's behalf.
Direct American intervention after Israel was targeted would be a political death sentence at home.

Trump desperately needed a bulletproof reason to restart the war because that’s exactly what Israel wants, and this Apache incident is nothing more than a convenient excuse manufactured to force the American people into it.
