🌹🇨🇦🇨🇦🌹 Today in Ottawa, I stood with permanent residence applicants and their families who are calling for a fairer, more transparent and more efficient immigration process.

Canada is a nation built by immigrants. People come here because they believe in our values—inclusion, fairness, opportunity, the rule of law and respect for every individual.

Security screening is essential to protecting Canada’s national interests and public safety, and I fully support a rigorous process. At the same time, applicants deserve timely decisions, clear communication and transparency. Some of those I met today have been waiting 30, 39, or even 75 months for a response. Behind every application is a person, a family, a career and a future.

Years of uncertainty affect applicants and their loved ones, and risk damaging Canada’s reputation as a welcoming and reliable destination for talent from around the world.

I recognize that IRCC professionals work under significant pressure. The goal is not to criticize public servants, but to encourage meaningful improvements that make the system more efficient, transparent and accountable.

I thank everyone who gathered peacefully and respectfully today. Constructive civic engagement is an important part of Canada’s democracy. I hope this nationwide gathering leads to meaningful dialogue and positive action.

@CitImmCanada This is not the case. Thousands of amazing graduate students from China have been sent into the security screening by IRCC for 10+ months, though most of them have a clear and harmless background. Many of them had to defer or even give up their offers.

Family reunification has effectively stalled, and many children attending this protest are being forced to live apart from their parents because of these delays. Families are left in limbo, careers are on hold, and futures remain uncertain.

These endless delays are also pushing highly skilled, high-value talent to leave Canada.

@CanadaSecCheck My study permit application has been pending for more than 10 months without a concrete reason from IRCC/CBSA. As a result I had to defer my graduate school offer twice, and could not receive funding for my research. The situation needs to be changed!

I have previously commented that I have been surprised that there has not been more political commentary about the increased security screening delays for Chinese nationals, as well as what appears to be a bureaucratic assumption that anyone from China could in the future be a spy.

Hopefully this protest brings attention to this issue.
