Hey Sanjay, yaar pata nahi kya ho raha hai. 20 years in design, the last 5 as VP. And I don't even get a callback for a role two levels below what I used to do.

A senior design leader asked me this. Last 7+ years in design strategy and people management. Recently laid off after 10+ years in a top enterprise company. Still looking.

I keep having a version of this conversation. Almost every week now.

He says: I don't see many such roles right now. What should I do?

I say: I understand your side. Senior leadership roles are rare right now. Tough market at that level.

He says: I've realised that too. Then, quite casually, he adds, so now I'm ready for super IC roles like Principal Designer.

I say: But just saying you're open is not enough.

See, understand what a recruiter is actually reading:

→ Your title has said VP of Design for 5 years
→ 7+ years in people management
→ You look overqualified for Principal Designer
→ You've lost touch with IC work. That's true.
→ You learned to prototype using Claude. But now every young designer can do that too.
→ She knows your CTC must be at least 1.5 crore, RSUs included.

He asked, so what do I do now?

I said, for super IC roles, companies want a lot more now. You'll have to work like a product builder. Part product manager. Part researcher. Part designer who can still ship real craft. Someone who still sits inside Figma, whose design taste is genuinely better than what AI can produce.

And the money gap is real. VP pay and Principal IC pay in India aren't even close. Expect almost half. Not a small cut.

Not sure how much my generic gyan helped him or made sense to him.

A lot of people I know are quietly going through this right now, trying to hold things together while figuring out what comes next.

Today, I saw a video of indie dogs being transported in trucks in Maharashtra.
And all I could think about was Ohh My Dog.

A reality we watched on screen suddenly feels like it is playing out in real life. Right here, in Maharashtra.
I have always been proud to call myself a Mumbaikar. But if innocent dogs can be packed into trucks and trafficked through my state, while those in power remain silent, that pride becomes very difficult to hold onto.

Dear @AUThackeray you have always spoken about your compassion and love for animals. So where is your voice now?

Where are these dogs being taken? Who is behind this? Why are they being transported like this? Is there a dog-meat trafficking network involved?*

Is this really what we have come down to?

I just hope that, like Ohh My Dog, these innocent dogs get their happy ending too.
