Thousands of spectators packed a muddy shoreline to watch as over 100 wild horses crossed a channel of water.

The Chincoteague Pony Swim is an annual event where "Saltwater Cowboys" guide wild horses across the Assateague Channel to Chincoteague Island in Virginia.

Held on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July, the horses then gallop through town and are auctioned off.

This was the 101st annual pony swim, and over 150 wild horses crossed the river to help benefit the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, as they manage herd sizes and check the health of the horses.
