I'm fully on board with kids having phones. Provided parents take responsibility for the distraction and don't blame the teacher when the kid doesn't complete work/pass.

@Marina35690107 @obrien_dunn @MarinaWriter1 @ESL_fairy And not working for free means no field trips, no concerts, no grads, ceremonies, guest speakers. Textbooks aren't supplied and teachers aren't given resources. So would you like teachers to just talk at kids and have them take notes then?

Teachers are supplied with desks, chairs (sometimes not enough), chalk/whiteboard markers usually come in early Nov, no art supplies, games, prizes. Make sure you send your kids with everything needed other than desk and chair!

@arrow_je If students aren't to have phones at school and they bring them anyway, the school should 100% have the right to confiscate them.

@ellejay_nc @RAD_is_awesome That doesn't happen here. Everyone in the graduating year gets to walk across that stage in cap and gown, whether they earned it (passed/graduated) or not.

@fionaross15 @krushowy @TorontoStar If parents can afford a cell phone for their kid, they could certainly afford to get them a laptop instead. I have yet to buy a laptop that costs what a smartphone does.

If teachers stop supplying necessities out of their own pocket, working for free, etc and let education be what the govt supports, maybe change would happen.

@ScholarlyMouse @sage_stage That only worked though because you actually had to pass the class. Now, kids can attend 3 classes a year and do one or two assignments and admin pressures teachers to pass them or just changes marks to pass the kids who didn't earn the credit.

We aren't "allowed" to disagree with anything they do. They say we are teachers 24/7 and always have to behave as if we are on the job.

@theDRAMAgoat1 I had a parent not show up to a scheduled meeting or the rescheduled meeting. Then she emailed me that we absolutely had to meet because she needed to know how to help her child. She had not scheduled an interview for interview night. And then suggested we meet on Good Friday.

If everyone can walk off the street and figure out your job with no training and do the order themselves, you can't claim you are skilled labour and deserve to be paid like those who have skills, training, education, experience, etc for more pay.

@everettis1 Classroom management tools work and most teachers know how to use them. But stick too many kids in one room, with no consequences for bad and inappropriate behaviour, and take away levels/streaming so kids are overchallenged amd frustrated or underchallenged and bored, good luck

@ElanaMcdougall I find it has been abused in the complete opposite way. Kids won't do anything unless they get volunteer hours for it. Students used to help do things at school like set up for their band concert, help a peer, etc and now they won't do anything unless they can use their 40 hrs.

Though considering what we now know about brain development, maybe we do need to look at raising the legal age completely.

@angryartgal @JBradshaw01 Something does need to be done. Parents need to stop giving kids smartphones, letting them sign up to social media apps, and giving them unsupervised online time.

Don't let your kids sign up for social media accounts until they are older, don't give them smartphones, and supervise their internet time.

@annafoat @Enjoys_Reading @Teachers__Unite I stopped taking kids on field trips because you couldn't leave a kid who couldn't even behave at school behind. Couldn't safely bring the kid so now no one can go. I feel so badly for all the kids who want to learn, have these experiences, etc but they lose out because of 1 kid.
