I think teachers are most effective when they are transparent with their passion.
Love of content, love of learning, and love of kids… this is what students find so compelling.
Just because some teachers would rather stay in the classroom than go into administration doesn’t mean they aren’t leaders. Many have amazing talents which can benefit the whole school. Good leaders recognize and value them as experts.
One easy step to reduce homework is to stop calling it homework, call it independent practice.
Independent practice is essential, location is not!

Parents/teachers, want children to read? Let them read what they want. Even comics! Comic books avg 53.5 rare words per thousand, compared with 30.9 rare words per thousand in children's books, and 52.7 in adult books. Learning to read should be enjoyable!
Teachers, want to take something off your plate? Put HW in the trash, especially for elementary grades. Let students go home to run, play, and enjoy being a child. And read a little after playing. Then they come to school recharged instead of stressed out and you will too!
Anyone who doesn't think children need time for recess, play, and to socialize, doesn’t understand how children learn, and shouldn't be making decisions about how they learn.
There are teachers who are strong, highly motivated, and who like to take ideas and run with them and speak up when things aren’t working. Effective leaders embrace these teachers because they make the whole team better!
Administrators. do you carry a post it note pad with you? Always be ready to write a quick note of thanks or inspiration to your staff! Even if you come upon an empty room, leave a note of thanks or how lucky their students are to have them as a teacher. Go ahead, make their day!
Effective leaders don't feel the need to micromanage. They trust & respect their staff to do their job. They know their role is to sometimes mentor, but to always support and encourage those they lead. Effective leadership is getting the best out of those you lead.
Just because some teachers would rather stay in the classroom than go into administration doesn’t mean they aren’t leaders. Many have amazing talents which can benefit a school. Good leaders value them as experts and help maximize their talents for betterment of school & students
Where education misses the mark is that while reading and math are important, they aren't sufficient. The Arts, music, physical education, etc., are every bit as important!
We spend 50% more hours in school than Finland. They get 15 mins of recess every hour. They have NO standardized tests except for PISA in HS & they outperform us every time. The irony is that they created their system based on US schools and US university research in the 1970's.
