Judges matter but they must conduct themselves with professionalism, with objectivity and without politics. That also matters.

If a Judge ignores the conduct of powerful men and their children to get a promotion, they should be criticized and scrutinized. If a judge lies about private meetings. If a judge is too friendly with powerful men when they take the stand, that is something of concern.

If a magistrate is late for hearings, conducts themselves in a manner that creates a perception of bias they should be challenged. Magistratehood is not majesty.

If judges take bribes they should be outed and fired. If they participate in Presidential campaigns the public has a right to know. In America there is a big battle in appointment of judges because it is recognized that in some cases the politics and ideology of judges will influence how they rule. It’s dirty but it’s true.

In African dictatorships Presidents appoint judges they know will rule in their favor and they rig elections and rob people of political rights knowing that courts have their back. It’s well documented.

No country is immune from politicization. No country has the Charlie’s angels of Judges. That’s why it’s important to have checks and balances. To have trials televised and open to the public, so they can have a view of the law and its practice.

Judges do not become Gods once they have the title of Judge. They are mere mortals too. Men lie, women lie, Judges lie. Let’s not forget that in the debate.

Let’s also watch out for those who are doing public relations for judges. PR people who have been chosen to be ambassadors of Judges. There is nothing wrong with their work or participation in the chat but they are not neutral or objective actors. They write books and appear in media to particularly push a propaganda of the perfectness of Judges.

They should not just be given platform to speak without being challenged or balanced out with opposing voices. For the conversation to strengthen rule of law and the judiciary it must be honest and robust.

According to the Treaty of Vereeniging, in May 1902, the British Government made £3 million available to the Boers to cover the resettlement programme and another £3 million in interest-free loans. Landowners were provided with implements and seeds to rebuild their farms.

This is well known because it is a unique example of where reparations were paid by the victors to the vanquished.

Now we could haggle on whether enough was paid but then we would end opening a can of worms. One of the worms being what about the the 1000s of black people that were in concentration camps and their reparations.
