Such tragedies after a few days of hyperbole are to be lived as individual sorrows. There will be no mass angst against illegality, comprised building codes, rent seeking state actors and subaltern governance.

Perhaps like in the HauzRani fire of Delhi, where a cook was arrested for the tragedy, here too the guard can be arrested to show semblance of order.

Allan Greenspan was Ayn Rand's most devoted disciples. He was a regular at her NY place, where she held court on philosophy, politics, and economics. He was in awe of her fantasy of Objectivism — the idea that rational self-interest is the highest virtue, that laissez-faire capitalism is the only moral economic system, and that government intervention is inherently destructive.

He mainstreamed Ayn Rand's fantasies into US policy and such was this lure of his that he ended up serving as Fed Chair under 4 US presidents and in other roles under two (Ford and Nixon) and across the divide. What J Edgar was to FBI, he was to Fed.
Ayn Rand's fiction ended up in utopia but Allan Greenspan's ended in the financial crisis of 2008 and from which the world has never really recovered. Most of perverse excesses, prolific inequality and environment degradation that we see in the world today can be traced back to one or many of his calls at some point in time.
His life and role is a tale of caution and that needs deeper debate as he moves on. RIP Allan
