Today, I made an oath live on air that has been a decade in the making. Will you do the same?

I, Glenn Beck, alongside my fellow countrymen, and as a witness to my nation and the Almighty, now come forward in humility to covenant that the Lord is my God. I further covenant to remember to regularly commune with Him through prayer; to turn away from sin and error; to rear my family in righteousness, in patience, love, and kindness; to discern and sustain the law; and to perform my several duties properly, punctually, and to the utmost.

Now, if the Lord shall please to hear us, and inasmuch as we honor this covenant, then shall His bounty be poured down upon us as has never been seen.

The Lord will be our God and delight to dwell among our families, so that we partake of His wisdom, power, goodness, and truth. Love and solidarity shall reign within our households.

May our nation unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care, for his protection, that He may promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue. He shall grant unto this nation temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best. No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand created this great nation. It is the gracious gift of the Most High God. Only his tender care shall heal this nation's wounds. He will raise it to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, union, and plenty.

He has made us a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. We enlist His almighty hand that we may once again choose life, that we and our seed may live by obeying His voice and cleaving to Him. He is our life and our prosperity. May my family and this country ever stand in solemn testimony of the most High.

The football star Kylian Mbappé was offered $1 billion to join the Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal.

But that wouldn't have made him even nearly the richest athlete in history.

Because there was a Roman chariot racer called Gaius Appuleius Diocles who earned more than $15 billion...

Chelsea FC in England have spent over one billion dollars on new players in the last year alone, and Cristiano Ronaldo is currently earning $200 million per year at the Saudi club Al-Nassr. Has football gone mad? Is it right for athletes to earn such exorbitant wages?

Let's leave the politics of that question to one side and simply observe that, as with so much else, there are historical precedents — and one in particular: Gaius Appuleius Diocles.

Chariot racing was the most popular sport in Ancient Rome, with races held all over the empire — there are ruins of huge stadiums around Europe. The crowds flocked to watch their favourite teams or racers, and the money came pouring in.

Gaius Appuleius Diocles was born in the province of Lusitania, modern-day Portugal, in 104 AD. That's where many charioteers came from — not just those who raced in Rome itself, but right across the empire — because it was where the fastest racehorses on the continent were bred.

And such was the career that Gaius pursued; he made his racing debut in Rome, which then had a population of well over one million and was the richest and largest city on earth, at the age of just 18.

There were four "factiones", sort of like teams, in Ancient Roman chariot racing: Green, Red, White, and Blue. Each had their own stables, managers, breeders, agents, patrons, sponsors, and racers. These were large, professional organisations with hordes of fans and fierce rivalries. Even the Emperor himself usually had a favourite faction.

Gaius joined the Whites and won his first race after two years. He stayed with them for another four years. Then he moved to the Greens, where he had a torrid run of poor performances and a serious injury, followed three years later by a move to the Reds. There he remained for fifteen years, winning over one thousand races, before retiring at the age of 42 to a lovely little town called Praeneste.

Where did Gaius race? At the Circus Maximus in Rome, now a ruin but once a racing stadium which could hold more than 150,000 spectators. It's hard to imagine the atmosphere, with the thundering of the horses drowned out by the roaring of the crowds and the sound of splintering chariots...

We know much of this because of two monuments made in Gaius' honour after his retirement. They also include the rather impressive statistics of his racing career — 4,257 starts and 1,463 victories — and the prize money he won: a grand total of 35,863,120 sesterces.

These earnings are estimated to have been, in modern terms, about $15 billion, which would make him by far the richest athlete in history. His fortune was equivalent to about 1.5% of the Roman annual state expenditure, which would be like an American sportsperson being worth over $100 billion.

But this is not merely an interesting factoid. What does it tell us about Ancient Roman society during the Empire that regular people had enough time, and that there was enough money in the system, to support such a wealthy sporting scene?

Alas, if you don't much like sports and wonder why some people get so worked up about athletes running round a field and kicking a ball... there's also a Roman precedent for that. Here's what the lawyer Pliny the Younger wrote to a friend in the year 98 AD:

"The Races were on, a type of spectacle which has never had the slightest attraction for me. I can find nothing new or different in them: once seen is enough, so it surprises me all the more that so many thousands of adult men should have such a childish passion for it."

Whether sports stars should earn the money they do is a complicated question. But, in any case, Kylian Mbappé has a long way to go before he's on the level of Gaius Appuleius Diocles...

This is a portrait of Daniel Lambert, who was at one point considered to be the heaviest person in human history. At the age of 18, Lambert began working as a prison guard and was much respected for his ability to befriend and help rehabilitate many of the prisoners.

Despite being physically active, abstaining from alcohol, and not eating large amounts of food, Lambert continued to steadily gain weight. By 1805, he weighed a whopping 700 lbs. (320 kgs).

Concerned for his own well-being, Lambert continued to exercise by taking long walks and building his strength. He once walked 7 miles (11 km) from Woolwich to the City of London "with much less apparent fatigue than several middle-sized men who were of the party". In terms of strength, Lambert was able to easily carry 560 lbs. (254 kg) and had the ability to stand on one leg. In one particular incident, demonstrating both his agility and strength, Lambert knocked out a bear that was trying to attack his dog.

In 1805, Lambert decided to put himself on exhibition and charge people a shilling to visit him in his home at 53 Piccadilly. He worked 5 hours a day, talking to nearly 400 daily visitors on a variety of topics concerning dogs, sports, and animal husbandry. Lambert also enacted a rule that everyone who entered his home needed to remove their hats. When one visitor reportedly refused to remove his hat "even if the King were present", Lambert gently replied, "Then by G-, Sir, you must instantly quit this room, as I do not consider it a mark of respect due to myself, but to the ladies and gentlemen who honor me with their company."

Lambert suddenly passed away in 1809 at the age of 39. His coffin was so large that it needed to be pulled by 20 men. His gravestone read:

"In Remembrance of that Prodigy in Nature.
DANIEL LAMBERT.
a Native of Leicester:
who was possessed of an exalted and convivial Mind
and in personal Greatness had no Competitor
He measured three Feet one Inch round the Leg
nine Feet four Inches round the Body
and weighed

The first modern flushable toilet was invented in 1596 by Sir John Harrington. He installed one for his godmother, Queen Elizabeth I. His invention included a water tank and a flush valve. However, the flush toilet wouldn't become popular for another 250 years. Most toilets in Medieval Europe were either holes in the ground, communal outhouses, or chamber pots.

If you were fortunate and born into considerable wealth, you might have used a garderobe (derived from the French word for "wardrobe"). These were small rooms built adjacent to the walls of medieval castles. The toilet was connected to a vertical shaft that extended down to the ground.

Low-ranking soldiers or servants were responsible for taking buckets of water to "flush" waste down the vertical shaft. Garderobes, which literally translates to "guarding one's robes," originated from the practice of hanging clothes in the shaft to kill fleas using the ammonia in urine.

Occasionally, daring knights would attempt sneak attacks by entering the castle through the shaft connected to the garderobe. Throughout history, there have been several famous people who died on the toilet, including King Edmund II of England (30 November 1016), Jaromír Duke of Bohemia (4 November 1035), Godfrey IV Duke of Lower Lorraine (circa 26 or 27 February 1076), Wenceslaus III of Bohemia (4 August 1306), and Uesugi Kenshin (19 April 1578).

In 1948, Swiss pharmacologist Peter Witt studied the effect of drugs on spiders. He conducted an experiment in which he dosed the spiders by feeding them drugged flies or by giving them a drop of a drug in water. He then photographed their webs before and after the drugs were administered. These were the results.

In 1957, researchers noted that spiders on low doses of LSD were "unaware of outside influences and concentrated on the job." Their webs showed consistent regularity. On depressants, "they 'forgot' to finish what they had started and the result was a very ineffective food gathering device."

Every once in a while, a ewe will give birth to a lamb and reject it. If the lamb is returned to the ewe, the mother may even kick the poor animal away. Once a ewe rejects one of her lambs, she will never change her mind.
These little lambs will hang their heads so low that it looks like something is wrong with its neck. Their spirit is broken. These lambs are called “bummer lambs.”
Unless the shepherd intervenes, that lamb will die, rejected and alone. So, do you know what the shepherd does? He takes that rejected little one into his home, hand-feeds it and keep it warm by the fire. He will wrap it up with blankets and hold it to his chest so the bummer can hear his heartbeat.
Once the lamb is strong enough, the shepherd will place it back in the field with the rest of the flock. But that sheep never forgets how the shepherd cared for him when his mother rejected him.
When the shepherd calls for the flock, guess who runs to him first? That is right, the bummer sheep. He knows his voice intimately. It is not that the bummer lamb is loved more, it just knows intimately the one who loves it.
So many of us are bummer lambs, rejected and broken. But He is the good Shepherd. He cares for our every need and holds us close to His heart so we can hear His heart beat. We may be broken but we are deeply loved by the Shepherd.

The 5th tallest statue in the world, Sendai Daikannon in Japan. The city of Sendai (pop. 1 million) in the Töhoku region of Japan has an instantly recognizable skyline, thanks to the massive Sendai Daikannon statue that stands on a hill to the north of the city center. Daikannon is the representation of the Japanese Buddhist Bodhisattva, the Goddess of Mercy, and it is large. Towering 328 feet or 100 meters into the heavens, the statue was the largest in the world when it was completed in 1991. It was replaced at the top spot by another Japanese statue, the Ushiku Daibutsu in 1993. An elevator takes visitors to the top of Sendai Daikannon, where a series of windows offer stunning views across the city. Apart from the views, the statue is also a place of worship and reflection. Though currently ranked 5th tallest in the world, it is still the tallest statue of a Goddess in Japan.
