Did you know, a “brood patch” is a patch of featherless skin that develops on the underside of birds during the nesting season? This patch of skin is well supplied with blood vessels to transfer heat to their eggs when incubating. #baldeagles#broodpatch#DidYouKnow
In heartfelt reverence for #MemorialDay, the Alaska Raptor Center's staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors, extend their deepest gratitude to the valiant men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while honorably serving in the United States Armed Forces. #thankyou

This Orange-crowned #Warbler came to us after a window collision and was able to be released just a few hours later!

Enrichment for Spirit! Today, part of her meal was hidden inside boxes, giving her the chance to tear, pull, and problem solve her way to a reward.
Activities like this help stimulate natural behaviors while also keeping their minds active. #Enrichment#girldinner#BaldEagle
The Alaska Raptor Center is open for the 2026 Summer Season! Come experience one of Sitka’s top attractions, meet our Raptors-in-Residence, and learn all about Alaska’s incredible birds of prey.
We’re open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with last admission at 3:30 PM.
Meet Varia, our newest Raptor-in-Residence! 🦉 After a vehicle strike, changes to her flight mean she can’t hunt in the wild. Now she serves as an ambassador.
Keeping roadsides free of food & trash helps protect birds like Varia. #barredowl#welcomehome#owls
Happy #EarthDay! Here at the Center, we see firsthand how the health of our environment affects the birds in our care. This Earth Day, we encourage simple actions, like keeping roadsides clean, to help keep our feathered friends safe. #WildlifeConservation#YouCanMakeADifference
Meet Fe!
This American Kestrel came to us in 2021 from Santa Fe, New Mexico. After her rescue, she became too accustomed to humans to survive in the wild. Today, she plays an important role as an ambassador. #Falcon#birdsofprey#ambassador
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Otus, our beloved Western Screech Owl ambassador. Otus helped us connect visitors to the incredible world of owls. He will be deeply missed by our staff, volunteers, and all who had the chance to meet him.
Meet Narwhal, a Great Horned Owl, who was left him with a fractured wing after a vehicle collision. Although he healed, his flight is no longer silent enough for hunting, making life in the wild impossible. #wildlifeconservation#owls#GreatHornedOwl
After six months of care, Hazel is ready to head home! This Bald Eagle came to us from Bird TLC, after being shot.
Now, Hazel has reached the end of her rehabilitative journey and is ready to head back into the wild! #ConservationInAction#HazelTheEagle#SecondChances
Back in March, heavy snow prevented our usual fish pickup. Luckily, our #friends at Fortress of the Bear stepped in to help transport a fresh fish delivery, ensuring our #BaldEagle patients didn’t miss a meal.
We’re incredibly #grateful to have such wonderful community partners!
A big thanks to Harbor Mountain Brewery for inviting us to your Ren Faire this weekend! Narwhal the Great Horned Owl had a hoot, and so did we. We loved getting to share a bit about raptors with such a fun and festive crowd! #GreatHornedOwl#Owl#RenFaire
Meet Bruiser, a #BaldEagle who arrived unable to fly due to rodenticide poisoning. After treatment and supportive care, he made a strong recovery and was released back into the wild! #Rodenticides can unintentionally harm wildlife when predators consume poisoned prey. #wildlife
@ladyofthefire Since Bald Eagles are extremely mobile, and go where ever the fish takes them, we can release our Bald Eagle patience here in town. From here, they will easily make their way back to wherever they want!
