I’ve known Gana for 18 years. We started the DA Youth together as part of its first leadership, established DASO branches across the country, got the main DA onto Twitter after seeing the traction we were getting with younger voters on here, championed what was then the party’s biggest march on an issue critical to youth employment, and travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometres together.

Over the years, we both ran and won campaigns for others, served together on FedEx and Federal Council, were councillors at the same time, and later became MPLs in different provinces.

One thing I can say about him is that he takes very few things personally. He understands that politics is sometimes just politics, and he always tries to conduct himself like a gentleman. It’s probably why our friendship and working relationship have lasted so long. We have similar dispositions, and we both have little patience for bullies, cowards or pretentious people. I also appreciate that neither of us has ever been shy about telling people exactly where they stand.

I’m incredibly proud of the work he’s doing on his new path.

It’s Comrades week, so I won’t even bother calling him because I know I’ll get a long lecture about eating “carbs” and race strategy. One-track mind this time of year.

Love you, brother, but I’m not waking up at 5am to stand on the side of the road anymore, not now that I have kids, shem. I’ll be cheering you on from the app instead.

As South Africa, we hosted the World Cup in 2010.

Upon the insistence of FIFA & in accordance with the Host Country & Host City Agreements, we had to waiver laws, by-laws, policies, regulations, processes & the like, to ensure that South Africa became the ultimate hosts of the world during the period.

We passed special legislation specifically to meet FIFA's hosting requirements for the 2010 World Cup. The most important were the '2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Special Measures Act, 2006 (Act 11 of 2006)' and the 'Second 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Special Measures Act, 2006 (Act 12 of 2006)'. These laws were enacted to give legal effect to the guarantees we had made to FIFA during the bidding process.

The special laws effected temporary special provisions & exceptions in certain areas, including: Special visa, work permit, & accreditation arrangements for players, officials, media & visitors.

These requirements were not exclusive to South Africa, as Korea & Japan (2002), Germany (2006), Brazil (2014), Russia (2018), Qatar (2022), had to enact the same.
