Many Protestants tell Catholics we "read things into Scripture" when we see Old Testament types fulfilled in the New.

But the apostles did this constantly.

Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:4 says the Israelites "drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ."

That's typology. The literal rock in Exodus becomes a sign pointing forward to Christ.

Paul does it again in Galatians 4:24. Hagar and Sarah aren't just historical women. They "represent two covenants." His words, not mine.

The author of Hebrews spends three entire chapters (7-10) reading the Old Testament typologically. Melchizedek prefigures Christ's eternal priesthood. The tabernacle is "a copy and shadow of heavenly things" (Hebrews 8:5). The animal sacrifices point forward to the one sacrifice of Calvary.

This isn't some medieval Catholic invention.

St. Augustine put it perfectly around 400 AD: "The New Testament is hidden in the Old. The Old Testament is revealed in the New."

That's exactly how the apostles read their Bibles. Types and fulfillments. Shadows and realities. The whole Old Testament is a signpost pointing to Christ and His Church.

So here's the real question for sola scriptura advocates.

You say Scripture alone is your authority. You say you follow the apostolic teaching. But do you follow the apostolic method of reading Scripture?

Because when Catholics see the Passover lamb pointing to the Eucharist, or the Ark of the Covenant pointing to Mary, we're doing exactly what Paul did.

If typology was good enough for the apostles, why isn't it good enough for you?

How is Mary the “New Eve”?

Let’s look ⬇️

Eve listens to the words of the serpent (Satan), and damnation enters the world.

Mary listens to the words of the angel, Gabriel, and salvation enters the world.

As St. Irenaeus, the second-century bishop of Lyon, teaches: “The knot of Eve’s disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary” (Against Heresies 3.22.4).

And “for what the virgin Eve had bound fast through unbelief, this did the virgin Mary set free through faith.”

The Blessed Virgin Mary provides a redemption of femininity and motherhood.

Where Eve was pulled from Adam, the new Adam is pulled from Mary.

As the old Adam and Eve were created in the grace of God, so too are the new Adam and Eve without the stain of original sin. For Mary, this is the Immaculate conception.

Mary is without sin not only due to her role as the “New Ark of the Covenant,” the perfected earthly vessel for God, but also due to her role as New Eve—a return to the perfection of the Garden and man’s rectitude with God.

Eve is the “mother of all who live,” but Mary is the mother of all who live in Christ.

In all this, it is now a woman, Mary, who is exalted as the highest creature in all of creation.
