this is one of the many reasons why guillermo del toro is one of the best directors in film. building real, practical sets is becoming such a lost art and it’s so important people like him are trying to prevent that. cgi and green screen cannot replace this form of art.
Speaking of which, OpenAI has been funding a feature film, "Critterz", which is supposed to show how Gen AI can compete with Disney & Pixar movies with a budget of... around $30 million.
"Flow" was made for under $3 million.
Glad you asked!
1) LLMs are created by scraping all the art and writing off the internet without creator’s compensation or consent, allowing companies to make billions of stolen labor
2) This tech allows companies to then fire the very employees whose work they stole. It’s like taking your blood and using it to power your robot replacement
3) The resulting auto-generated plagiarism slurry can be extremely realistic, allowing companies, governments, scammers etc to create an infinite deluge of propaganda, fake evidence, scams, revenge porn, and addictive meaningless slop flooding our eyes from cradle to grave, a kind of reality-obliterating internet pollution at a scale beyond human comprehension.
4) That’s not even counting the massive electricity drain of the server farms that are gobbling up land and the impending economic crash when the so called “abundance” promised by Silicon Valley vultures never meets their impossible promises.
LLMs are to societal trust what toxic runoff is to drinking water. And just like the pollution that comes from Exxon Mobile, this disaster is only possible when the government abdicates its regulatory responsibility because it’s been bought off by the CEOs responsible
TLDR:
PROS: You can make Judy Hopps make out with Martin Luther King
CONS: Mass unemployment, the death of reality, a permanent underclass addicted to a digital meth slot machine
The Indie Game Awards has disqualified Clair Obscur: Expidtion 33 for its use of GenAI
E33 won Game of the Year, but the award was retracted

I have to add my voice to the chorus: there is nothing more insulting, disempowering, or a surer sign that you’re working with hacks (& there are many, wedged into middle management in AAA) than receiving an AI moodboard as a concept artist, and I need to talk about it
another concept artist here wanting to say that any designer worth their salt would agree when i say that 50% of creating GREAT designs is the quality of reference gathered and the personal visual library of the artist actually doing the work
using ai generated images in your reference boards to "get an idea" actively hamstrings your ability to explore and iterate actual new, interesting designs because it creates a preconceived end goal in your head and allows no room for deviation and happy accidents to happen
the greatest concept artists ive ever met are people who expose themselves to new things and are truly curious about the world. they spend DAYS collecting high quality, accurate reference and have images of everything you could ever think of under the sun in their personal libraries- fabrics and stitching from so many different cultures, cool rocks, weird plants, interesting architecture, landscapes, art from every time period etc.
do not fall for the "generate ideas" excuse, you are hired as a concept artist first for your great ideas and design sense, not because you can paint the prettiest picture. the last thing many of us want- gamers and artists alike- is for the medium we all love so much to become only derivative slop with the same repackaged visuals and experiences.
My professor who used to be an animator at Pixar was praising this commercial the other day he was like have you guys seen the ad with the wolf? And the entire class blew up praising it
It’s crazy how a commercial is one of the most artistically genius things to come out lately
Charlie Cox says that "any nomination or any credit" for his role in 'CLAIR OBSCUR: EXPEDITION 33' should be given to his characters motion capture artist
"There's an amazing french actor by the name of Maxence Cazorla who did almost all of the motion capture for that role... any nomination or any credit I get I really have to give to him"
Guillermo Del Toro tells NPR he’d “rather die” than use generative AI:
“AI, particularly generative AI — I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested. I'm 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak... The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I'd rather die.’”

the lion is the slightest bit concerned that it seems the endgame of technology has been to merge woman with machine, giving man a fantasy of total control, of turning the unknowable feminine into something programmable and obedient
imagine spending half a decade “defending” an artist’s right to own their art, only to then do ai slop promo once you’re rich enough to buy your art back…
Zelda Williams has made a statement asking people to stop sending her AI videos of her father, Robin Williams:
“Stop believing I wanna see it or that I’ll understand, I don’t and I won’t. If you’re just trying to troll me, I’ve seen way worse, i’ll restrict and move on. But please, if you’ve got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It’s dumb, it’s a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it’s NOT what he’d want.
To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to ‘this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that’s enough’, just so other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening.
You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else’s throat hoping they’ll give you a little thumbs up and like it. Gross.”
