You're right that both systems were parliamentary in form; the legislature played the central role in selecting the Prime Minister. But the actual democratic quality of the two systems in 1951 was very different.
By then, the UK already had:
1- Secret ballot since 1872
2- Full adult suffrage (men and women) since 1928
3- Highly competitive elections with strong institutions and minimal elite manipulation.
In Iran in 1951:
1- Only men could vote (women didn’t get the vote until 1963)
2- Majlis elections (held since 1906) were still heavily influenced by landowners, the royal court, and local power brokers in many areas
3- The Shah retained important constitutional powers, including formally appointing the Prime Minister.
Mosaddegh was chosen by a vote in the Majlis (the 16th term) under the 1906 Constitution, then appointed by the Shah. That was how the system worked. However, calling it equivalent to the British system ignores these major gaps in inclusivity and competitiveness.
By 1953, Mosaddegh had taken emergency powers and moved to sideline the Shah and dissolve parliament through a referendum that was widely viewed as undemocratic. It was like Churchill wanting to dissolve the House of Commons and the House of Lords combined. Naturally, the Shah responded by exercising his constitutional authority to dismiss him and appoint a new prime minister. He was restoring the balance of the constitutional monarchy, not overthrowing a mature democracy.
In conclusion, No. Mossadegh was not democratically elected by modern standards. He was appointed by the Shah.
UK designated IRGC as a terrorist organization. BBC Farsi top managers have been promoting IRGC leaders constantly online. Will there be a change in this behavior? @Ofcom@BBCWorld
Maziyar (Maximilian) Jazani, an Iranian-French lawyer and the son of Bijan Jazani, one of the founding members of the Fedai guerrilla group (Fadaiyan-e-Khalq), and among the most prominent leftist opponents of the Shah, speaks about the journey that led him to support Iran’s Lion and Sun revolution and Prince Reza Pahlavi.
His story is a reminder that what will shape Iran’s future is not our different pasts, but our shared commitment to a common destination. The Lion and Sun revolution belongs to every Iranian who places freedom, prosperity, and the establishment of a national democratic government above past divisions, political affiliations, or ideological differences.
During the meeting, Prince Reza Pahlavi and Mr. Jazani also discussed legal cooperation and exchanged views on the Iran Prosperity Project.
That is incorrect. Mosaddegh was elected by parliament, not by direct popular vote, for the premiership. Under Iran’s 1906 constitution, the Shah formally appointed the Prime Minister after parliamentary approval. So no! He wasn't a democratically elected official... He was directly appointed by the Parliament and the Shah. Have your facts straight before debating me.
@bbcpersian
What is gonna happen to Ayatollah @BBC now that its employer was finally proscribed as a terrorist organization after 47 years? Lay offs or jail?

I have a serious question: why would @mossad_fa attempt to recruit Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a confirmed anti-Semite and Holocaust denier?
What is the difference between this moron and Ghalibaf? They both have the blood of thousands of innocent people on their hands.

🚨BREAKING: The New York Times reports that former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is under house arrest after the IRGC’s intelligence arm uncovered extensive contacts with Israel.
If accurate, the report highlights the extraordinary reach and sophistication of Israeli intelligence inside Iran’s terror regime, suggesting Israel was engaged in a years long effort not only to prepare for the regime’s defeat, but also to shape what would come next.
The Times reports that Ahmadinejad underwent a striking political transformation as Israel’s intelligence effort progressed. He abandoned much of the anti Israel rhetoric that once defined him, recast himself as a more moderate figure, and began openly criticizing the regime’s corruption and powerful security establishment.
According to the report, Mossad Director David Barnea secretly met Ahmadinejad in Budapest in 2024 as part of an effort to recruit him and position him as a potential leader in a post regime Iran.
The report further claims Mossad operatives extracted Ahmadinejad from the scene of an Israeli airstrike and transported him to a secret safe house inside Iran.
@FoxNews Jesus Christ! Enough with the rhetoric already and finish them off! There will never be a lasting peace as long as there is a molecule left of the terrorist Islamic Republic. Sincerely, an Iranian-American!
Wow.
After refusing to partner with the US to take out the #IRGCTerrorists, @Keir_Starmer has finally proscribed the IRGC as a terrorist organization on his way out as UK Prime Minister.
This means the UK government will now have to deport half its population — since they’re either IRGC members, their families, or sympathizers.
Better late than never… I guess?

You stand with freedom-fighting Iranians; they stand with you. The #US has lost a true icon, a patriot, and the Iranians have lost their beloved Uncle.
@LindseyGrahamSC,Thank you for your lifelong dedication to America and the world’s peace. Thank you for your unwavering support during our darkest hours. Thank you for championing our leader, HIH @PahlaviReza. You were the only US politician to proudly wave our true flag, the Lion and Sun, on the global stage, when no one else did.
