The decision of the West Bengal Government to officially commemorate Paschimbanga Divas on 20th June marks an important recognition of a defining chapter in the state’s history.
For decades, successive Left Front governments and later the Mamata Banerjee government resisted acknowledging 20th June as West Bengal’s Foundation Day, despite its undeniable historical significance. On this day in 1947, elected representatives from the non-Muslim majority districts of undivided Bengal voted in favour of partition and chose to remain part of India. That decision altered the course of history. Without it, the whole of Bengal would have become part of Pakistan.
This outcome was neither inevitable nor accidental. It was achieved through the tireless efforts of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee and countless others who stood firm during one of the darkest periods in Bengal’s history. In the aftermath of Direct Action Day and the horrific violence of the Noakhali riots, they fought to ensure that Bengali Hindus would have a secure homeland within India. The birth of West Bengal was the result of a conscious democratic choice backed by immense sacrifice and political courage.
Historical truths cannot be ignored or rewritten to suit changing political narratives. Recognising 20th June is not an act of political partisanship. It is an acknowledgement of the decisions, sacrifices and struggles that shaped modern West Bengal and secured its place within the Indian Union.
For the BJP, the observance of 20th June as West Bengal’s Foundation Day carries significance beyond symbolism. It represents a civilisational and ideological milestone, reaffirming the vision championed by Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee and those who fought to preserve Bengal’s cultural identity, democratic values and national belonging. By honouring this day, the state pays tribute to the forces that shaped its destiny and safeguards a historical truth that deserves remembrance by future generations.

They killed his mother too.
Sam was only 7 months old.
They murdered a mother. And her infant.
One of the most brutal scenes in human history has been leaked.

UPDATE: 6‑month medical licence review today — 15‑month suspension continues.
The tribunal decision was based mainly on my arrests and pending charges — something I could not properly defend due to sub judice (contempt of court). My hands were tied. But I gave it my all.
Thank God for everything. We fought another day for the noble cause of Palestine. For the independence of our British institutions from the 'israel' lobby. For our freedom of speech.
Thank you to everyone who gave up their day to support me. I am honoured and grateful to stand beside you all.
Special thanks to my panel support @Jordmcl1 and @EllenKriesels — you were my backbone today.
We will fight until we get justice, God willing.
Next stop: the High Court. 🇵🇸🇬🇧
This is so insane. A evil genocidal country went and illegally kidnapped peaceful protesters on international waters and now they are parading them around like cattle and NOT A SINGLE major news network is covering it.
