@rasmiakf describes the mission of Hester Street, and walks PoliticsNY through her favorite spots in Brooklyn (after 27 years in the borough, she's got some good ones!) @amNewYork
@jcuooo @GioFvcks By organizing with other tenants towards demands that will actually change this system, like a National Tenants Bill of Rights and social housing. And by applying strategic pressure to decisionmakers who have allowed the market to run, unchecked.
Don't jump in my mentions about rental assistance. That's a bailout for the industry that comes with no strings attached and does nothing to change the imbalance of power between landlords and tenants. Talk to me about rent control. Talk to me about non-market social housing.
Especially compared to gas price discourse, chatter on rent demonstrates the chokehold the profiteers have on our imaginations. Rent is one of our biggest bills, yet we've normalized rent gouging. Rents are set based on whatever the market allows. We could change that, actually.
I was so grateful my parents were standing by my side today just as they have been my entire life. Two Bangladeshi immigrants who had never been to City Hall before just witnessed their daughter become their elected representative. I still have to do the dishes though 😂

This blistering dissent, and so many by Justice Sotomayor since she arrived on the bench, has me thinking about what it must feel like to ascend to the highest Court and be forced to exist largely as a dissenter as you watch that Court erode the protections of the Constitution.
@geneweingarten I pride myself on my Pakistani cooking. I also love South Indian, and fusion dishes. That you got paid to write this tripe, and boldly spew your racism is deplorable.
May your rice be clumpy, roti dry, your chilies unforgivable, your chai cold, and your papadams soft.
At Hester Street, our goal is equitable, sustainable, resilient neighborhoods, and cities. We combine technical planning, design, and development expertise with deep, meaningful engagement that addresses the communities priorities. This is how we do it: https://t.co/fF3euiQjz5
We are honored to be among the finalists' list of the Spring Forward Fund, an initiative by @JustworksHR to support the work developed by nonprofits in the Justworks community. This is the project we presented in the words of Nisha Baliga, Hester Street´s Co-ED.
